Who ever wins is going to be made for life anyway, so the prize money does not matter.

There was an article in the cycling press (I forget which, exactly) that followed Sky over last year's Dauphine. Right at the start it mentioned reading the "rules" that were posted on the team bus, one of which was something along the lines of all prize money going into a pot and being shared out at the end of the season, to include the support staff...

Found it: All Aboard The Magic Bus - CycleSport Online

For those who don't want to trawl the article (which is very interesting, btw):

TEAM SKY’S RULES
Written on a poster inside the bus
We will respect one another and watch each other’s backs
We will be honest with one another
We will respect team equipment
We will be on time
We will communicate openly and regularly
If we want our helmets cleaned we will leave them on the bus
We will pool all prize money from races and distribute at the end of the year
Any team bonuses from the team will be split between riders on that race
We will give 15% of all race bonuses and prize money to staff
We will speak English if we are in a group
We will debrief after every race
We will always wear team kit and apparel as instructed in the team dress code
We will not use our phones at dinner – if absolutely required we will leave the table to have the conversation
We will respect the bus
We will respect personnel and management
We will ask for any changes to be made to the bikes (gearing, wheel selection etc) the night before the race and not on race day
We will follow the RULES

There's a link on http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/tour-shorts-you-better-wait-trying-is-not-enough cycling news detailing how much the teams have won so far - for stages and jearsey time etc. Not very much!

Sky is leading the unofficial prize money classification, swimming in €77,920 with Liquigas-Cannondale and Europcar with €57,200 and €42,390 respectively.
It’s not all celebrations and champagne for some of the teams with fewer results in the first two weeks of racing. Alejandro Valverde was touted as a possible contender in this year’s race but his team is scraping the bottom of the table with just €3,610. That’s not enough to cover the team’s fuel bill.

So if Armstrong does have his titles removed and his prize money has to be returned do all the team mates and his mechanics etc have to pay it back?

the true answer is that it depends on the market you represent, and how well you can sell in to it. Wiggins, being the homely blokey bloke that he is will always make more money from sponsorship deals than Froome, who appears to have come from outer space. Then again, were Victoria Pendleton to win the TdF (I'm theorising here) her earnings would be greatly more than Wiggins.

One of the beefs that Hinault had with LeMond is that LeMond earned ten times as much.

Jacques Anquetil started the fashion of giving all his prize money for winning the tdf to his team mates in the 60's to thank them.
