Last night i had a bit of a Titanic evening. I watched a few documentaries about the ship's sinking and about the background of the passengers. One mentioned a wealthy passenger who's body was found with 2,500 dollars in cash in his pockets. Now he might've had this amount on him as he emptied his safe before desperately seeking a boat for survival. Maybe he didn't normally carry such a vast amount of money. I only take out with me as much as i'm going to need. I don't think i'd carry anything over a hundred pounds, and that's be a rare event. I remember a bloke down the local pub once who was flashing his cash. Every time he bought a drink he pulled out this wedge of money which looked to be around five hundred pounds. Someone else must've noticed this because he was robbed on the way home.
The question is how much cash do you carry?

None.

Only backward freaks, philistines and criminals carry cash.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I usually have about £10.00. At the moment though I have over £300 (It's my Christmas present from my mum). I usually pay for everything with my credit card. Oh and I have the proverbial jar full of loose change that I don't seem to be able to get rid of, especially the copper.

I've noticed in some of these "soap operas" lately that the barmaid hands over a card machine to the customer when they buy a drink. Using a card to pay for something costing 3 quid or less seems a bit odd to me.

It's a modern invention called 'contactless' payment. It's in every day use now. You don't have to use a pin just place your card next to the machine. You can also do the same using your smartphone if you have the App.

I have an emergency £20 tucked in the back of my phone case, other than that I tend not to carry cash. However, on a night out I will take cash, so it is easier to split bills and put into a kitty.

Normally about £20-40 unless I'm off out with my mates for a bit of a session then I'll take £100. I use my card for nearly everything, no matter how small the transaction, as it's easier to keep track of what I've spent that way. I'm a bit anal like that, I use the Home Budget app on my Mac to keep track of everything that I buy / spend.

I was having this conversation with some friends the other day and I put a theory to the test and went 2 weeks just using my iPhone for payments.

Granted, living in a city makes this much more feasible than your post office and pub village but it really wasnt a hardship at all. In fact, over 2 weeks, the only time I regretted not having cash was to settle a food bill with a friend who didn't have any means of accepting online payment from me!

I'll always lift £50 at the cashpoint and when it runs out, lift another.

Right now, I've £15 sterling and 20 euro in my wallet.

I usually try to keep £10 in my wallet, or maybe £20 if that's all the cash machine will provide, and a bit of small change in my pocket for car parks and such like.

This week, I am carrying an extra £40 in cash just in case of bumping into friends and ending up in the pub for pre-Xmas eats and drinks.
