Am I the only one with a mental image of "ronny" biggs682, sitting at his computer making a note of the locations and costs of all our steeds.

Mine cost £1.50 has a spike on the saddle, one decent wheel, is rusty, squeaks and is totally not worth stealing.

*edit* and having just voted, I know have a handy list of the 10 of you with bikes costing over a grand

Good point.

I spent £350 on my Ridgeback Solo last year. Since then, I've put an S3X on the back, and a dynohub on the front. Rack & bottle cage were (quite deliberately) old & scratty. Stickers have cost pence. I've replaced the bar tape and been through two sets of tyres (about to change to my second set of Durano Plus), and I'm on (I think) my third chain.

In 1996, I spent £600 on my Orbit Silver Medal. Since then, it's had a respray, three sets of wheels, two saddles, two rear derailleurs and countless chains, cables, brake blocks etc since.

This year, I've done 5128km commuting, of which roughly half has been on each bike.

Clarion, you might remember but I have a Solo and am looking to do a similar hub gear conversion. Any hints or tips and more importantly, is it any good?

Depends which one, neither are exactly expensive. Roadies a B'twin double with STi shifters about £180 about 4 years ago (approx 1 week after Sheffield city centre flooded)

The other cost next to nothing. 2 scrap bikes off freegle/freecycle (I asked for a 'project' bike) The only thing I needed to buy was gear cables and 2 new tyres. Strange looking beast. Slim steel Raleigh hybrid frame and the fattest slicks I could fit in the frame.

The S3X is great fun. I can ride in a high gear right up to the lights, stop, change down, then set off in a low enough gear to get moving. Once I hit about 30kph, I change up and just keep accelerating. It's great.

The main problem I have had is that the bottom gear is a bit ropy. I can't stop it slipping without leaving the other two gears out of whack.

I'm kind of reconciled to two gears, but it would really be helpful to have a usable low gear. I should contact SA.

It's a remarkably easy install. I've got the bar end lever, which is what I have for my tourer anyway, so a set up I am very happy with.

£20, old Raleigh Pioneer hybrid bought second hand a couple of years ago. I've probably spent closer to £100 on it including bits I've added (new forks, added rack & mudguards, and I've recently fitted butterfly bars...). My winter studded tyres cost 3x as much as the bike.

Would quite like to get a hub-geared commuter bike at some point though...

What do you want me to put?

40% of my time I commute on an £80 bike

60% of my time I commute on a £1,000 bike.

I have bought around £250 of consumables, clothing and parts this year. 60% of my cycling is non commute.

My main commute bike is a Specialized Secteur Elite at £1000 RRP but I am fortunate in having somewhere secure to keep it while at work, otherwise I wouldnt dream of using something as expensive.
