How much for a special treat meal for two ?

I would probably have to go to Chicago to pay that much. My town has a lot of fast food and above places, but no truly fine dining. We had one place, but it was downtown, in Bloomington, and did not present well. Run down building, little sketchy area of town near bars and pubs. Good food, but not that good. If I'm going to pay a great deal for a meal, it had better be a great meal.(properly cooked and presented food, knowledgeable and capable staff, and good location.) Bike lasts forever. A great meal, about 24-36 hours, depending on how much fiber you have in your diet.

It would be tough to spend over 500ukp in Houston, we have some great places to eat, but with more restaurants per capita than any other city in the world, the competition keeps the prices down. I've nudged over 300ukp a couple of times, but usually only because I've gone a bit stupid on the wine. I've only spent over 500ukp once and that was back when I was living near London and it wasn't so much a meal for two, more a p!ss up with a couple of mates (they paid their own equally stupid tab).

• Bloomington-Normal is home to the most restaurants per capita in the entire country, mostly due to the fact that we have four colleges located here.
• At least, that is what our local wiki claims. Subject to interpretation. Houston has nicer restaurants generally.
• It sure has a lot of restaurants, but none very posh. This is due to the large number of university students, the large number of people passing through town, (I-55 and I-74 both border Bloomington-Normal) and the variety of food folks can get here. That being said, if I want a good German meal, I have to travel about 40+ miles to Gibson City.

Is there such a thing as a good German meal?

I think we've gone up to £500 once. Tasting menu plus flight of wine at the in-house restaurant at a decent hotel.

One of my colleagues spent £100 a head on a wine-tasting the night before last. Admittedly it was a Dom Perignon tasting and came with a free bottle of the stuff.

Afternoon tea at a top London hotel is a good treat at around £50 per head. Me & the Mrs treat ourselves a few times a year. We've been to The Savoy a couple of times, going again in April for my Mums 70th birthday, and the two of us are going to The Ritz in July. Its very popular and you need to book well in advance. We also go to a local hotel in St.Albans which does a wonderful afternoon tea but not at London prices.

My most expensive dinner was well into four figures per head, but the food was excellent, the wine was better and the meal was served at Mach 2. Best value meal I ever had.

I can think of many places that we have been for a special treat meal, but all have been dictated by the venue rather than the price

.....and I have had better nights out in some small pubs and restaurants than in some of the more expensive
