How much is the average price of a bike in the UK? £242

And bicycle sales in Britain are second only to Germany in Europe, says new official statistics

Statistics from COLIPED and COLIBI have revealed that the average price of a bicycle in the UK is €280, or around £242.

The figure means that in 2010 the UK trailed eight other European countries in its pricing for bicycles.

Topping the table by a huge margin is the Netherlands, where the average price of a bicycle is €745. Dropping €285 to second place, Germany’s average price is €460.

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, Sweden and Finland are third to eight in the table, with average prices ranging from €400 to €300. The prices are inclusive of VAT.

Bicycle sales in the UK The report throws further light on the state of the UK cycle industry. Bicycle sales in Britain are currently second only to Germany.

3,640,000 bikes were sold in the UK last year, closing the gap on Germany, which saw 4,010,000 bikes sold in the same period. France (3,031,000), Italy (1,771,000) and the Netherlands (1,213,000) took third, fourth and fifth spot in terms of bikes sold.

The figure of 3,640,000 units represents a seven per cent rise from 2009's 3,400,000 bikes and 2008's 3,311,000.

I am very surprised that we are above France, Italy and Holland for bike sales and especially by that much. Blimey shows what I know...

Seems low to me, but I guess loads of BSO type bikes are sold ,compaired to relatively few carbon types.

what is average? Is that the mean, mode or median? Does it include kids bikes?

I expect it's because they've all got bikes already. We're still catching up.

Well this is what I was thinking.
Being a very regular visitor to Hamburg. I am always suprised at how many (utility, you don't see a lot of road bikes) bikes are locked up around the streets and in daily use. Far more then I see in London. It seem's that the majority of Hamburgers seem to own a bike.

I agree with Beebo that the statistics have been slewed by the number of BSOs - after all they need to be replaced every other week when vital bits fall off!

ok - BSO's may not be up to the 70+ mile rides that many on here do - however BSO's for children are (in general) usually fine. My 4yr old is learning to ride on a BSO ( a real proper cheapy BSO as well!) that my oldest (now 11) had when he was 4............

Indeed it was only about a year ago I learned about the pitfalls of BSO's (aother term I only learn in the last few weeks), and decided to buy something slightly better than a dirt cheap argos/halfords bike for myself and my older 2 boys............

Admittedly mine is a BSO, but if I'd not bought a BSO then there would be one less family taking up cycling................
