When I get my new sunny day commuter bike soon it will be about 12kg less than my current bad weather commuter.

Aye, all of that and more and my current "commuter" starts out on the back foot, as it's a 20 year old steel framed rigid mountain bike.

The difference between my commuter and my weekend bike is huge.
Mainly because one is made of carbon and the other steel with a hub gear.

My commuter bike has
2x fibre flare
magicshine rear light
magicshine front light
magicshine battery
carradice saddle bag with blackburn mars 4
carradice saddle bag support
hope vision 1
water bottle
garmin edge 705
mudguards.

Very little... it's great when your wife works on the same site as you. A saddle bag with 2 tubes, multi-tool & tyre leavers. On the frame there's a mini pump, 3 rear lights & 2 front lights.

Smart Superflash x 2
1 Knog Frog
Topeak Tri bag
Ay-Ups
Couple of bungees

My commuter weighs the proverbial ton:
1 Pannier (sometimes 2)
1x Rack
Mini Pump & bracket (although its usually put in the pannier along with the spare tube and p'ture repair kit)
Kyptoflex Cable
D Lock (New York)
Mud Guards
Smart Bspoke light & bracket
Cateye 510 bracket
Blackburn Mars 4.0 and bracket
Cateye TL600 7 bracket
(although in summer this is reduced)
I've got Topeak brackets fitted for a Wedge bag & phone bag but these are seldom used.
Oh and while I'm being weight concious there also 2 bottle cages and a bracket for a smart 1/2 watt.

For the winter, I now have a topeak beam rack this carries my "saddle bag" kit too (tube, co2 etc) and main rear light (MJ818) with a small trunk bag on it which carries my work kit and a second light (Smart 1/2W).

In the summer I intend to commute with it monday and take the whole rack off and leave it and kit at work until friday hometime.

Bike itself > GPS, MJ808, other P7 torch as backup (when dark, in daylight I carry just one), Smart 1/2W (when trunk bag isn't attached), Tribag (battery, phone, keys etc comes off in summer too).

I have multiple bikes though, fixed ss has full guards, geared has aero bars.

There's little difference in my commuter/free time bike.

Partly because they are interchangeable and I don't need to take too much to work. It probably boild down to:

-glasses
-works phone
-front / rear lights (although I will sometimes have the free time bike)
- works socks / duds on the way back from work

However I don't have 1.5l (so 1.5kgs more or less) of drinks on board the commuter.

I find the topeak aero wedge packs great for interchanging between bikes (got three sizes).

Commuter bike

1 x Magicshine front light + battery
1 x RSP front light
1 x Bell F12 cycle computer
Crud Roadracer guards
Mini pump & bracket
Bottle cage
Bottle (Used to carry home made soup in the winter)
2 x Lunar superflash
Carradice Camper Longflap + contents
Carradice Bagman Expedition

Leisure bike

As above - Swap soup for proper drink

My commute is pretty flat so I don't feel the weight too much once upto speed.

I carry the following;

  • Mudguards
  • 1x pannier bag (The other stays at home)
  • Full water bottle
  • 2x front lights
  • 2x rear lights
  • Pump
Just taking the pannier bag off makes the bike wonderfully light. The difference between a commuter and a leisure bike.

My bike tends to have a single pannier containing first aid kit, hi viz vests x6, multi tools, wd40, oil & an a4 folder full of paperwork (all needed for bikeability). On top of the rack I have the mini cones (stack of 50). Apart from that its just the usual pump, lock, lights and water bottle.
