send a text to someone in america, my dad was on holiday in florida, was in chicago last night and is now in new york... pesky volcano is keeping him stateside for now, good old mother nature putting us in our place

anyhoo, i want to tell him to find an internet café or borrow a hotel computer so he can email us updates rather than a more costly text

It doesn't cost you - it cost's him ... the person abroad has to pay the additional costs. As for how much - I don't know - sorry.

As summerdays says, the roaming charges go to the roamer.

As for how much it'll cost him, that depends on a million things (network, contract, who he's connected with over there, what bundle he has etc) so it's pretty much impossible to say.
