Through town: every 5-6 seconds, and before any manoeuvre.

Out of town; every 10-12 seconds, whenever a sound of an approaching vehicle is heard, and before every manoeuvre.

No mirrors.

I ride a vespa and getting my motorbike licence taught me so much. Its made me a better car driver as well, and i use the same techniques out on the bike. Always check, no such thing as too many checks.

When I feel I need to but not constantly. If a motor is going to take me out from behind at 60mph there's not a lot I'm going to be able to do about that. If I have a vehicle sitting behind me I'll give them a look so they know that I know they are there.
On the balance of it I spend most of my time time looking and scanning the road/junctions/traffic ahead to think what might/will happen and what I need to be ready to do.

I do look behind both before moving and at other times, but I suspect I could do more often. It depends on the current traffic situation and where I feel I need to concentrate on.

Srsly?

You need to spend more time watching where you're going!
It's a quick glance to the right using peripheral vision rather than a full-on head turn. You need eyes up your arse on my commute.

I would never look straight if I looked every time I am overtaken. I shoulder check when I am moving off line, turning left or right, clearing my throat and the most important one the eye contact attempt at all pinch points or tailgaters otherwise noted as the poison death stare or the "you are not going to try that are you" look. Also when stopping suddenly.

I should probably get a mirror because, no matter how much I practice I seem to veer across the road when I look back! Seems easier over my left shoulder for some reason

The trick @Mo1959 is to relax your shoulders , arm's and hands as you turn your head .
its the tension in the upper body that causes the bike to vere..

not teachingyou how to suck eggs ...just years of motorcycling.

took me a good six months when I first got back on the bike to not do this, it was so bad I had to stop to make right turns!

For me it is a combination of hearing, sight, local knowledge and a sixth sense

There are certain roads where I use mirrors and checks more than others

Same here...I could probably do with looking more often. Tend to rely on hearing and randomly looking over my shoulder.
