i heard that ppl who adopt the vocal patterns of countries thay are visting tend to suffer from a form of nuerosis and a need to feel that they fit in and are not truely comfortable

Oh come one - dont be so stupid.

So all you can look me in the eye and say youve NEVER EVER imitated a foreign accent when in a foreign country! to be understood easier.

After I lived abroad for a few years, I came home speaking in a strange drawl. Because of my accent and the fact that we (West of Scotlanders) speak so quickly, I'd had to slow down my diction with the end result being this strange way of talking which took a few weeks to get rid of!

I've never imitated a foreign accent when speaking english abroad but I will speak slower and use simpler words to understand.

I'll only use a foreign accent if speaking it that language.

Whats funny about that clip is that the reporter was speaking better english than Mac.

That's funny :0)

I think Brits are arrogant enough to think that they have no need to learn any foreign languages. Speaking English in a French ascent is just as good!

And who can blame us? It's not our fault that other people can't speak properly. It's amazing that they manage to talk to each other isn't it?

I'm a linguist and I don't find this surprising at all; living in the Netherlands he will have modified the way he speaks for the convenience of his hosts. I once shared a flat with a French girl and I used to find that if she failed to understand anything I said in English I only had to repeat it in a silly French accent and she understood it straight away.

Never got to shag her though. Shame.

Quoth Mike Harding:

An upper class Englishman never learns a foreign language. He knows his own language is the best, why should he bother learning something inferior? The one phrase he needs to know in any language is, “Do you speak English? Then fetch me someone who does!”. This attitude persists, so that the world over bars echo to braying English voices calling out, “I say, garçon, I mean charwallah, I mean boy, fetch me deux pintas de bierre. Chop chop, mein petite camarade, mucho pronto! What! OK?”.
