We took our eldest (at the time, 'only') to New Zealand to meet the reli's. At the time, her language skills had extended no further than 'ma', possibly a stab at 'mum', The Teletubbies had recently arrived there, and we were all in my uncle's living room when they came on the telly. We briefly chatted about what a phenomenon they'd been back home, then conversation shifted. A minute later there was a brief lull in the chat, and the baby said, clear as a bell: Tinky-Winky. Cue dropped jaws all round...

My boy's first words were 'Car bon'. In my defence I was trying to teach the parrot to say it for a laugh but a more talented mimic was in the room. I got divorced soon after.
