Welcome!

Don't change the bike, keep it and then get a new bike, that way you will have a modern bike and a 'Vintage' bike, which people quite like these days.

I would get the gears seen too though. Oh, and I still use clips sometimes, depending on what trousers I'm wearing at the time.

Hi and welcome Paul don't worry yourself over the speed issue ! so ok others may be faster so what has long as you get to where ever you are going and on a vintage machine to boot lol. I hope the bike is ok once you get it back from it's service and then you will be able to get out and start to build up to those ludicrus speeds some of us can get to (no not me he say's).

Hi Paul and :welcome:.

As others have said, keep the Raleigh if you like it and get a new one too. The old one can be fettled up and made to ride good as new.

Another cycle clip user here  (got some 1980s Ever Ready lights lurking around somewhere too :giggle: )

Thanks for the welcome folks. Reading through a welter of information on this forum has left me with much to absorb, and a number of questions - which I suppose should be asked elsewhere on this forum.

I will hang on to my vintage bike, which is due back from a service tomorrow, and hopefully continue my longer rides to get to a decent level of fitness. Not sure if I can improve the bike, certainly the gearing is a little high for me. I intend to weigh it also, it will give me an idea of what I need to look at when buying something more modern. Though I will keep my current steed anyway.

I like to think that a bike such as yours can be given a whole new lease of life by converting it to straight bars and fitting a rack to make it a short hop/town bike that you can use for those little journeys like nipping down the bank or for a loaf of bread without the rigmarole of sticking your cycle gear on and not having to constantly keep an eye on it from the queue in the bakery. Just keep it a halfway decent lock on it. So two bikes with different uses which may well end up as several bikes with different uses.
Happy cycling Gaz
