Have bash at your local councilor plus your mp at one of the surgeries they hold, and doe's she ride with others or know some who also use these roads it may give her more clout.

I'll go down the local authority route and see what they say, we stay in a fairly horse aware place and there are loads of horse "warning" signs elsewhere so it may be that nobody has mentioned it for this particular road.

AFAIK it depends if the road in question is a national trunk rout.

For instance; a road that passes through North Essex and terminates at the port of Harwich was a main rout and was the responsibility of the government.

Originally a 3 figure number ( A604 ) it was downgraded to a 4 figure number ( A1017 ) and became the responsibility of the local council ( Essex ).

I'm not sure if this 3 or 4 figure thing applies nationwide though.

It's the same "blame someone else principle" as applies when your precious little rug rat grows up with a lack of
discipline and you can then blame the teachers.

Whoops ! A typo.

We got our local councillor involved when we and a couple of neighbours wanted double yellow lines on our road. He seemed to push it with the local council. It does seem to be a numbers game though, if more people want it than oppose it you'll be ok.
We didn't get our yellow lines because there were more car abandoning numpties in our street than people who wanted the lines.

I hope it isn't a numbers game, as more people in the village where I live hate cyclists than like them.

You should to hear them in the pub. They don't pay tax. I saw three riding two abreast. They blind me with their lights.
One even complains that they have forced the council to mend the pot holes. It goes on and on.

Wait till they find out there closing the road on Thursday for "The Girls."

Sadly most highway changes are only made up after a number of recorded accidents/ or reported near misses have occurred at the site.
Road signs require a Road Traffic Order to be made, otherwise the roads would be over-run with signs for every conceivable 'hazard'.

We did get a sign in our little village for vehicles to "look out for children" but what did they put up a warning sign for sheep, it appears these are more important than kids !! Then again I guess the sheep do out number the kids lol.

Getting road signage or painting changed is a major issue and is taken very seriously by councils - i.e. they seriously don't like spending the lolly.

Besides which, I'm not sure another triangular warning sign at the side of the road causes any vehicle driver to seriously reduce their speed in preparation to meet what they may encounter in the middle of the road... the worst ones being the 'SLOW- Blind summit" signs on the A68 through County Durham and Northumberland.... where there are also signs warning drivers of the number of serious accidents and fatalities on that short section of road and you still get idiots driving at 60mph+ over the top of the hills where their cars and lorries are unweighted to find tractors, cyclists and heavy farm vehicles, or horses, just the other side often with mud on the road in winter or combines in summer.

We wanted to get double yellow lines painted to prevent drivers from parking and obscuring our view as we emerged from our road - not a chance in Hell. And as for getting a 20 mph limit in our street, which is used as a shortcut, when all the other residential streets in the borough have been given a 20 mph limit - not a chance in Hell.

The way to get road signs erected is to sacrifice a few children and get yourselves shot up to the top of the league table of streets deserving traffic calming. If you happen to live in a nice middle-class district where you teach your kids not to dash across the road, you've no chance of any expenditure.

Anyone know if it is possible to make an application for warning signs to be erected on a stretch of road; Mrs Marmion rides a horse on a regular basis on a road and was wondering if there is anyway of getting some warning signs erected?

Bring it up with your local community council, they are normally pretty good with all of this sort of stuff, and if your request is sensible they will do the follow up with the Local Council roads department, I know our community council has got a few things like that sorted, including a traffic Island and extended pavement in the village to help people crossing to the station, a 40mph limit and signs, it was national speed limit before, however, our local community council rep is very good, I have to say that as I live with her :okay:
