I may be just me but i dont like tats on the legs,or should i say, tats on the legs and nowhere else.It appears odd to me,fair enough when you have tats in other places but just on the leg doesn't look right for me.The upper arm is the one i would go for if this is your first tat.

I was thinking that as well. But then again, given that I am in shorts quite a bit due to cycling so it would be seen more than upper arm.

I shall ponder some more.

Colour takes no longer than black or water shading. This is my lower leg, took about 3 - 4 hours

The pain is irrelevant course if flipping hurts but it's bearable depending on where you're tattoo is. I have a number and would suggest you take the design in and see what the Tattooist has to offer and where he would suggest you have it, personally the leg sounds about right for your design (I am thinking of having one on my left leg) Look at their work they have to be registered with the council these days - go for it if you're seriously thinking about it you're halfway there chuck

What would a tattoo artist need to work with? Pics? Concepts? Verbal explanation?

I'm looking at something around my favourite band, ACDC, and including the artwork of Highway to Hell album, the flags of Australia and Scotland and Angus's guitar. The reason I have put off for so long is that I was worried I might wake up one morning and think "Bon Scott and Angus Young were a right lot of crap"...but with each passing year I realise just how awesome they were/are :becool:

Going by @jayonabike's 3-4 hours for his lower leg, I reckon it would take 8-10 hours or more if I got full coverage of the lower leg, and maybe 6-8 hours if upper arm/shoulder based on what I can picture in my head (which, admittedly, does not function very well a lot of the time)

If I went in with something as simple as this and explained it to the artist would he/she be able to knock something up?

Any decent tattooist should be able to create a stunning design from those Marmion.
If the tattooist you find is anything like mine they'll prefer doing something a bit different and interesting rather than the never ending stream of "tribal tedium" my guy seems to get. Sure it pays his bills but he likes a job he can get his teeth into. I shouldn't imagine my upper right arm looks like anyone elses.

Before my first tattoo (different tattooist back then) which was 30 years ago now when I was a late teen, I went into the studio whenever one of my mates were getting inked and just watched. The tattooist was perfectly fine with this, and after about 6 months I had my first one done.

It hurt like fire and I actually passed out (wimp!) but nowadays I'm fine with it. It's a very annoying pain but not as bad as it seemed all those years ago.

Cheers, I'm not wanting to re-create any of the pics but to have a design based on them - no need for pristine flags with borders, I'd much prefer them to be abstract, likewise with the album artwork and Angus's guitar and the band logo. Something which captures my feelings about what it means to me. I don't like "clean and linear", I'd rather have something which gives an "essence" of being something. I'm sure that sounds completely pretentious, but I know what I mean and it is not intended to be.
