Quite agree.

But functioanality aside, if you are an OS producer there comes a point where the 'old' OS has reached near saturation coverage in sales terms and to make a profit, you need something new to tempt people with.

And even better if the first OS you tempt them with isn't very good or compatible with programs they already have you can flog them the updated versions that do work with it. Then flog them another even better OS that looks like it will eclipse the first so everyone will buy that one as the first wasn't that good.
Not saying anyone would do that of course.

blimey that takes me back.:thumbsup: Win 3.1 on a 286 laptop with 16Mb memory and 500Mb hard drive

put together my first business plan on that in 1995 and learnt to use a computer in the process
