I have Ribble CR3 bike http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/ribble-cr3-cx/#pid=30907 which is not obvious from the pic but has square section seat stays (carbon). It does have mudguard mounts though

I have a seatpost rack but it is not huge and as I have spare rack and panniers I am looking at rigging that up for a 3 day trip to France allowing a bit more space

Any suggestions on how to attach the rack using P clips to the square stays? Can I just clamp them on (maybe wrap in tape first) or will the round P clip damage the squared corners.

Or any other ideas?

Clamping a rack to carbon seatstays doesn't sound like a great idea to me. That's not an expert opinion, just a gut reaction. Maybe it will be fine. I don't know.

Anyway, if I were doing it, I would wrap a bit of thin polystyrene foam or a section from an old inner tube around the stays for protection, regardless of the shape of the stays.

I have found these rubber lined clips on eBay that looks quite good http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/QW8AAOSwxN5WWlMU/s-l500.jpg

I will only have two front panniers on there and really a minimal amount - 4-5kg max

Could you perhaps use a saddle bad/barbag ala alpkit instead for that amount of luggage? I'd be happier with that. I'm sure the seatstays will be fine, but I'd be more worried about slippage than damage.
That would involve buying yet more kit! I already have a seatpost rack and bag like these but am looking for an option that allows a little bit more kit

Otherwise, I'd use some of that rubber strip that comes with bike lights (all of us proper cyclists have a box of it somewhere) between the clamp and the stay.[/QUOTE]
That one and similar ones I found all seem to be available in 31.8mm. My seatpost is 31.6mm (Ribble with Deda post). Is that close enough that it will be ok?

I thought it was the chain stays you were trying to fix to, not the seat post. If the 31.8 is a mite too big, a cm of shim (ie not all the way round) will solve it.

Be wary with the seatpost adaptor as it can on some bikes interfere with the brakes

On my wife's bike the re was a clash with the arms

Having said that - you have discs so it will be fine

I've often used a 3 point rack - mudguard mounts at the bottom and onto the brake bolt at the top
Another possible fix is to use just one of the top mounts, but bend it up to fix it with the seatclamp bolt. This may need a longer bolt.
I've done this on my Ti401 to avoid a clash with the brake, and because there's no top mount for the rack.
