I think everyone is missing the point. Whether or not tapping on the window was advisable, the response by the driver was
then he followed me and wedged me off the road
This is really dangerous behaviour, and should be reported. Someone that does this in response to a tap on the window is likely to kill someone, one day.

the suggestion that after you've nearly been killed by a vehicle tapping on the window makes you the one who's the aggressor

He doesn't make that suggestion. I think you've replied to the wrong post.

just throw him the w*nker sign...and get on with it:okay:

Sound advice.
I once gestured to a driver to calm down (moved outstretched hand up and down, palm face-down) and the driver screeched to a halt, asked if I had called him a w*nker, and suggested he'd get the baseball bat out of his boot and teach me a lesson.

Yeah, don't respond to bad driving in case the driver turns out to be a psycho. BUT if you do respond to bad driving, and the driver reveals themselves to be a psycho (either by doing something that could kill you - see OP, or making very violent threats - see quote above) report them to the police. You may just save someone's life.

I had an incident today where I was undertaken dangerously by an extremely aggressive person - the usual Russian mafia type driving a large black limo - on Westminster Bridge leading into Parliament Square. I tapped on his window as I passed him in the jam going around Parliament Square to let him know that was not OK driving, then he followed me and wedged me off the road for a bit of verbal abuse. All this is caught on camera - I will review it tonight to see whether worth reporting. But if I do decide to report, what is the best way to do so? Is it Form 966 of the Metropolitan Police? And what do I do with the camera footage?

i would have thought with all the cameras around our towns and cities the incident would already have been spotted and monitored by a cctv operator, I certainly would not have tapped on the car window because you never know what sort of a nutter is behind the wheel unless of course you are confident in your own self defence abilities. To my mind it would have been wiser to take note of the vehicle registration mark and report it on the above mentioned site.
it is often the case that the cyclist is the victim in these senarios because the irate driver is already in an adrenalin fuelled rage when he gets out of the car.

Particularly on parliament square, there'll be a camera or fifty around there and they'll all be working and watched

Thanks everyone for the advice on window tapping - I appreciate it, really I do.

Why did you feel it necessary to tap on his window? What did you hope to gain from it? Clearly you gained nothing and may even have placed yourself in danger.

It's not a case of standing up. It's a case of maximising opportunities to keep oneself free of harm, and to risk placing oneself in further danger to complain about someone else placing you in danger in the first place seems a bit bizarre.

It's all on camera, if it were genuinely that dangerous then let someone else do the leg work.
i think i love you drago:wub:

Blimey, some people seem to believe there's actually someone sitting watching all those thousands of traffic cameras!

The cameras are there to collect evidence after the event and occasionally to monitor traffic flow and pedestrian activity. Nobody will see a small incident like the one described.

My neighbour is a PC who cycles and his strong opinion is that it is dangerously provocative to tackle car drivers as they can and do turn violent.

your'e not in a position to teach him..you ain't the law

Unsurprisingly you have missed my point.

You said the OP caused his own downfall by doing what he did, yet you believe the outcome would be different by doing something (arguably) worse.

There have been several occasions on here where a scamera wearer has posted the negative outcome of giving someone the V's, which we've had the displeasure to view.
