How to spend a £20 HMV gift card

This is a result of our new download culture.

I wanted to get our girls a couple of CD's for Christmas and went to the local mall expecting to find a couple of record shops. Nothing, nada, zilch. Finally asked one of the girls at the coffe shop and she pointed me to the Sainsbury's store in the mall but not to get my hopes up if it wasn't mainstream. Fortunately I was after JLS & Glee so they had plenty in stock.

I imagine Kindle & book readers are starting to have an impact on the printed word as well.

Better get to a store and use it quick... I don't think you can use the gift cards online. At least, I couldn't work out how to last time I had one (a couple of years ago).

HMV are not 'closing' 40 HMV and 20 Waterstone stores this year, they are 'exiting' them.
That was the wording of their official announcement.

The punters are not deceived - HMV's shares were down 21% in eight hours today, which is quite a tumble.

Surely they will swap the card for vouchers?

Could you buy vouchers with the card and go to waterstones?

I can see HMV going the same way as some other media retailers.

They shut all the branches and go for the "pop-up" store concept.

There is at least one chain outfit that just opens a retail units for the finacial quarter over christmas and then shuts it again after the sales.
