How worn out should my cleats be before replacing?

When you start having problems because they are worn out?

I've rarely worn out SPD metal cleats. My old Look plastic cleats only used to last a few months before they stopped clicking in and out properly and therefore had to be replaced.

SPD cleats are alarmingly pricey.

As has been said, if you've reason to think they're worn, replace them.

If you're buying from Halfords always always click and collect or ask them to price match - the in store price was significantly more than their own website last time I was in.

I've always been a Look user, Delta then Keos. In maybe 20 years I've only replaced maybe 3 sets, but I try to avoid walking on them, surely the most wearing situation,

When do they need replacing ? I find when they start to unclip unintentionally and increasing tension wont solve it.

Before you lose your teeth.

If you are unclipping under power, replace.

I change my SPD cleats when the "wings" on either side are worn down to about a millimetre at the tip.

You're plannng on racing, so your kit should be in tip top nick! Ask your mum to get you some new ones if worn

Every time I bought a pair of SPD pedals (and they were only about £18 at the time!) a pair of cleats came with them. I call 'cleats rarely wear out and I have several spare sets from pedal purchases anyway' refreshingly inexpensive!

But never wear out. Im still on the same original set 6 years on, thousands of miles of cycling.

I replace mine when they resemble bronze-age finds with an unusually keen edge.

I don't replace them as such, I throw away the shoes because there's no way the cleats are coming off and get new shoes and cleats.

While I may take this approach I don't necessarily recommend it.
