Kodak have some adverts going out claiming that their printers can save money on ink but I have no direct experience.

Compatibles are fine for all but the most discerning of photo printing.
A note of caution....it depends on the make. Some are more sensitive than others. Wish I'd known this before I completely buggered my Canon. ;)

I'd endorse ebay - I tend to go for just-out-of-date genuines, at a fraction of the cost.

I might be unlucky but the last two generic toner carts I bought for my HP1100 each came to a horrible end, the latter almost damaging the printer as it went - bits of broken plastic wedged all over the rollers. Got refunds on both of them, but it's HP originals only for me from now on.

Having experimented with refilled generic cartridges from places like Cartridge World I concluded that:

a) They didn't last nearly as long as the HP originals

 The colour ones were crap and never worked at all - which the guy at colour world actually admitted and replaced it with an HP cartridge.

So I'm back on HP originals.

If you want to buy a new printer it is worth checking out Which magazine. They periodically reviews printers and always assesses what the costs per page of printing work out at. There are big variations between printers, even from the same manufacturer.

So far no bad experiences with compatibles, especially from the two sites I linked to. I did destroy a Canon with a refill kit and have never touched refill kits since.
