It arrived today, must say I am impressed by this phone. I love the built in gps on it. Only problem is getting used to the small keypad and its sensitivity.

I got myself a wildfire not too long ago, it's a pretty good phone, though it's even better once you swap out the battery for something a little longer lasting.

Currently had my phone unpluged for two days, with GPS, wifi, and mobile data all switched on and it's still got over 60% charge, that's with tweeting, watching youtube videos, browsing the net, and looking up map data, basically using it constantly.

one problem I've had with it is the touchscreen home, menu, back and search buttons, whilst typing on the screen I have a tendancy to miss, and end up back on the homescreen, or opening the search or other suchlike, but that's user error and I'm getting used to it now.

It's a great little phone.

Potsy, do you know the solution, you switch it off with the button on the top, then back on again and it loads the screen properly.

It works!!!

Playing Angry Birds demonstrates how relatively slow the processor/bus/thingy is on the Wildfire. It's a 500MHz processor and the iPhone is 600Mhz and yet things load far quicker. I'm tempted to trade up to a 1Ghz Desire because of this! Apart from that it really is a neat little device. For those using the GPS, there is a free voice synthesizer (text to speech) on Android Market which ties in with Google Maps Navigation thus turning your phone into a SatNav. A nice little app.

Wondering now if there's an Angry Birds Anonymous group in S London !

I have a Desire, and my sister has a Wildfire. I have also seen the Desire HD.

Desire > Wildfire > Desire HD

Wildfire is nice, a bit underpowered, but the pixel density is all wrong and teh quality is *shoot* compared to the Desire.

Desire HD is too big and also suffers from a funny pixel density (same resolution).

Camera sucks on the Wildfire, also does on the Desire but Wildfire is much worse.

Don't be a cheap arse and get a Desire, not HD, regular Desire - you don't see them around much on contracts now, consider buying sim free and getting a good sim-only deal.

Although the screen is noticeably worse than the Desire, I really only felt it when using the internet (the only time I feel the screen comes short when streaming video form the internet) - whereas you can make out small text without zooming in on the Desire, you have to zoom in on the Wildfire.

Not a big deal because the text snaps to fit the screen so you don't need to scroll round too much. the screen resolution isn't that bad. Yes i agree htc wildfire is not as good as the high end phones (Desire, Nexus) but for normal use it's fine. However it's not so bad that you can't enjoy what your watching and i can't argue with its' value for money.

Daughter has the wildfire and lots of problems with it..... first time round the phone just went dark after a few months.... sent it off to repair and they sent her a new one. The second phone suffered the same problem, I think the screen is a problem with the wildfire.

I have a desire - got it from carphonewarehouse and it came unlocked so I use it with any network I fancy. I quite like the phone but I still prefer my old iPhone..... something about the Iphone that makes it such a great phone, simplicity. I hate Apple though :-)

Is the wildfire the one with the dinky screen? I used to have the tattoo, with a 2.8 inch screen, problem with the small screens on android is that not all apps will be available if they've not being designed to run on the small screen. My android experience improved greatly when I went to the google nexus one, all apps available now and runs a lot quicker.Contract due for early upgrade this week, have narrowed it down to the samsung s2 or the htc incredible, samsung is better on paper but feels cheaper in the hand, I love the feel of the htc, would prefer to get a nexus phone again but the current nexus s specs are outdated already and too impatient to wait for the next incarnation

Is the HTC wildfire tri band? ... i.e. will it work in the USA?

Taken from the HTC website:

Network[sup]3[/sup]
Europe:

  • HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz
  • GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
Asia Pacific:

  • HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz
  • GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

3. Network bands in regions other than Europe and Asia Pacific may be different, depending on the mobile operator and your location.
Please check with your mobile operator.

1900MHz will get you basic coverage in US and Canada, but as phil notes, not 3G. Whether this is a big deal for you or not depends on whether you can afford to pay data roaming rates in US and Canada, because for voice and texts I doubt you'll notice the difference
