Hull commuter...a shot in the dark

Have you seen the route the TPT takes through Hull?

It's as though they want people to avoid the many good bits. If they sorted out the mile stretch of track between St Andrews Quay and Hessle, it'd be a lovely traffic free ride from North Ferriby to the Ferry, or turn off at the Deep to pick up the Hornsea track at Witham.

Goes through 2 really grotty bits on the west and north-east IIRC, could really do with a bit of a diversion I agree.

I'd say no
If I'm free when you are down here I'll take you round some of the better roads for cycling, maybe a forum ride, as there is a few of us round here

If you want to go to Hornsea, the route I take (although in reverse as I cycle up from Hull to Beverley then home this way) is out from Bilton on the B1238, through Sproatley and up Hull Road to Aldbrough. Then follow the B1242 up the coast from Aldbrough to Hornsea. About 14 miles each way, the first 'B' road I find is usually very quiet, the second has a little more traffic but nevertheless is still quiet.

The problem with the TPT is even the fully paved bits are being torn up by tree roots; I stopped using it after just two rides.

Have you tried going through Wawne, Benningholme and Arnold, then into Long Riston, Whinns Lane, Mill Lane and then Grundill Lane through Goxhill around the back of the Wassand Estate?

Interesting, I've done all those roads on separate routes but never linked them up to go Hornsea. There is Saturday's ride planned, which I think I will complete with a ride down to Withernsea, and depending on how hungover energetic I am, either straight to Hedon and back to Hull or down to Patrington, Sunk Island, Cherry Cobb Sands Land (nice, but boring) ,Paull and Hedon road to Hull.

Currently I take a pretty simple route of Hull to Beverley, to Leven, to Hornsea, Aldbrough, Sproatley, Bilton and back to Hull which is 43 miles. It's OK but between Leven and Hornsea it's busier the more sun there is, for obvious reasons!

Back in the days 26 miles was a long ride, I used to do Hull to Beverley, Routh, Benningholme and Swine. And as I got further I used to do the Hornsea route but turn off before Hornsea and ride around the roads around Sigglesthorne, Rise and Burton Constable. These were my winter rides as I was beginning. I do these rides on an evening now after work; only 4 months ago these were reserved for a weekend, with a good breakfast before hand, but it's amazing how the landscape has changed, lots of green on trees and green in the fields.

We truly are spoiled for choices. Both routes around Burton Constable, the south one to Coniston, or Jackeys Lane to Skirlaugh could be worth mixing in.

Some of the off roads are pleasant on the eye too. The river bank to Beverley gets you away from it all. I got from Brough, through Beverley and Swine to Sutton, all off road.

I assume that Wassand road is private, based on the fact Google haven't gone down there, so you have to go back up to the 'B' road?

No. Where your route takes a sharp left and goes to Seaton, you can turn right before the B road at the first cross roads in Sigglesthorne,Wassand Balk (signed Goxhill) and go round through Goxhill. It's a six and two threes if you're off into Hornsea, (although you can pick up the rail track) but it brings you near the water tower. But turn left then right and you come out on Rolston Rd.

Thank you for that. Finally got around to riding that route and it makes for a much nicer ride up that way than the busier roads, especially as a ride with company too as it's very quiet. There was some fun on Whins Lane I think it was, a large lorry met two cars coming the other way, and with a lack of any passing places, there was a "bit" of confusion. It was a nice rest for me though!

I knew the wind coming back home would be a nightmare so I kept it to a 40 miler and came off the coastal road at Aldbrough so I had enough in me to fight the wind!


42.5 miles, 2.5 hours

The cyclist must be from out of town because the only reaction you get from any Hullite if you shout at them is to be told to Fucx Off, so whats the point?

I was there last year and really enjoyed the Street Life Museum.
