Something I've mostly shied away from, but plenty of people have faces to their avatars.

Question: do you visualise a forummer as their avatar (even if it's the wrong gender)?

Discuss.

Yes, esp Noodley and Fab Foodie. Not so much if it's the wrong sex, unless I don't know the sex of the forummer, and therefore, that it's a mismatch..

Have to confess, I got the idea for this thread whilst glancing over a thread by the esteemed XmisterIS. Can't imagine why.

As long as RichP doesn't use the crisp packet photo as his avatar, I don't mind what people have as their avater!

Not really but the wrong gender thing is slightly annoying.

I was going to go for this but won't bother now.

I just think it's great that Ronnie Barker posts on here under an assumed name!

(and the gender thing can be a bit disconcerting at times!).

Funnily enough, those are two CC members that I had a strong mental image of.

I happened to be walking past a car park in Hebden Bridge last year (or the year before?) when Noodley was there with someone I knew from the old C+ forum (MSeries). Noodley looked very different to his avatar!

Even more strangely, I have to get up in about 6 hours time to ride the same route that they were about to tackle - 'Season of Mists' - goodnight! ;)

I'm one of those people who somehow thinks forumites look like their avatar - and XmisterlS is one of those, again with Noodley too, and then you sort of image lots of character traits that go with that image onto the person themselves. One bit of my mind knows this isn't true ... but it doesn't speak to the bit of my mind that thinks it is true    .

You have it exactly correct! That really is a photo of me on a Japanese gameshow. The game was "How many ping-pong balls can you shove up your .... " *ahem* family forum, say no more ...

Yes, me too - Noodley looks like Ronnie Barker, and Fab like Leonard Rossiter. I think even if I ever met them, I'd still have that impression once I was back online.

Dayvo is another one, and I have seen photos of him, but the idea still sticks.

I think with other people, although I can't think of a specific example, I tend to imagine them looking a bit like a member I have met, maybe one who has a similar posting style or opinions. Funny, isn't it?

And even funnier to think that not so very long ago, most people had no idea what even famous people really looked like - before photographs and telly and so on. There would even be members of your family you wouldn't know if you passed them in the street, if you'd only ever exchanged news via letters.
