hi all,

finally took the plunge after years of reservation and replaced my backpack with a rack and pannier. i was a bit hesitant to add weight to my nice light bianchi hybrid, i thought it would ruin the bikes nimble characteristics, but am pleased to report such is not the case. infact i feel more agile all round due to not having a veritable sack of potatoes hanging off my back. so for anyone out there who has a similar dilema to moi, then i say dump the backpack innit.

I concur. I cannot stand a rucksack as it makes my back extra sweaty. However, I do find that the bike feels a bit heavier with the rack on but then 99% of my riding is to and from work with a pannier bag on the rack.

Only ever ridden with a waist nag and not a full on rucksack but don't think I'd enjoy it too much.
Have recently put a seatpost rack on the Secteur(thanks palinrus) and got a matching bag so have a bit more carrying capacity on that bike now.

I did the same a while back. Unfortunately the bike isn't so light so it now weighs an absolute ton with a pannier on. The bike feels worse but you get less tired without the rucksack on for a few hours.

I have one bike fitted specially with a pannier for when I have that extra load...Normally though I use the bike(s) without the pannier.

I always seem to need a pannier...certainly for commuting with change of clothes, some work stuff, and to be honest, I can't be doing without the capability to just decide on the spot to go call in somewhere to buy something/transport something.

The times that I go to work with even the MTX bag on the post mounted rack, are alweays the times that I remember half way through the day that I am supposed to pick up 24 cans of cat food on the way home

I moved to a carradice bag recently. Best thing ever. I get a really sweaty back so having the extra airflow is great. Only issue is with the weight so high, trackstanding is more of a challenge.

I do like the look of those carradice saddle bags but I think I would need something around the 12L size as that is what my single pannier bag holds. I have looked at the bags that size and think they look a bit large to be hanging off the back of the saddle.

I think mine is 25l or so, it's the long flap camper.

My new set-up for commuting duties-enough room for me to carry all my essentials now, plus the side paniers fold up when not in use for a sleaker look.
