Honestly I could scream at just how useless some car operatives are.

On my hols all week and I planned a nice wee 40 miler today. After about 30 miles the old legs are getting a wee bit tiredypoohs and I come across this wee hill on a B road and think "I'll do it in 2nd gear, save my legs for the long slope further along."

Just as I hit the bottom of the hill Joe Cardriver comes up behind and sits there... not overtaking.... in a high gear.

I think "come on sonny Jim... You've got plenty of room to get past... The top of the hill is ages away yet."

Nah they sit there crawling behind me. I'm doing about 8mph. Yeah I'm that slow.

Then we get past the point where he could've overtaken quite safely....

I think "I bet you overtake now you useless sausage"... but they don't

Now I get over the brow of the hill and I'm crackered to be honest. I'm going to stop and swig some water and recover a wee bit of breath.

They STILL won't go past me. You can see the dead straight road for about a 1/4 mile ahead at this point. There's nothing coming. I could go get my own car and overtake myself there's that much room and time.

I stick my left hand out and pull onto the dirt/grass on the verge to get some water. Then they knock their car down to 1st or 2nd, thrash the tayters off it to get past me ( I'm not even on the actual road now you cretin) with a group of about 8 other motors behind them.

I bet they all think that he couldn't get past me because I was in the middle of the road or something rather than him (for twas an olde bloke) being a bellend in a Merc.

Rant over. Other than that wee bit of nonsense I had a pretty jolly ride. I managed to get up another hill that had defeated me twice before and did the 20 mile outward leg in (for me anyway) a quite impressive time.

I would be grateful that the car driver was prepared to follow you rather than take on a risky over-take. I know you didn't think it was risky, but he did, and it is his call as he has responsibility for the safe over-take.
My experience is that more often a car driver is not prepared to wait a few moments and will take risks to get past.

To me it illustrated his poor driving judgement. He had loads of room and time to get past and if he exercises such poor judgement of speed/distance/room/whatever in that circumstance, what's he like going past some kids playing at the side of the street or any other situation you care to imagine.

I suspect he's a "carbonneter". A genus of car driver who can't see much past their bonnet. Drives like anything beyond 10 yards is out of sight to him.

Agree, where there is doubt about an overtake I would much rather the driver who errs on the side of caution, than on the side of taking a risk with my life.

If it bothers you then do as you did, pull over for a sec which makes it clear to them that you want them to pass.

OP, stop moaning
He was a considerate older gent, did not want to chance it.
Good on him, hope you waved a thank you.
Disagree.
I didn't wave him a thank you as I'd stopped by the time he worked out he could get "past" me and was reaching down for my bottle... I wasn't even on the cowing road by this time.

Oh well

Pulling over on a hill with my feet clipped in and this bellend about 1 foot off my jacksee was NOT an option really. Well I suppose it was an option but I'd be wearing a Merc.

And I think he was taking more risks by NOT going past me.

I often find what look like less-experienced drivers hanging back unnecessarily. I find turning and looking at them helps - they know I know they're there and that often seems to give them the confidence to overtake me.

There are a lot of bends on the roads round my way and I will sometimes wave someone on - I know the roads really well (lived here more than 25 years) so I would never wave someone on into a double-bend or something. If I don't know the road I don't wave people on unless I can see as far as I would deem appropriate in a car.

But yeah, sometimes people seem to take an age to get past - "Pass wide and slow" seems to be translated as "hestitate, pass slowly, slow down a bit more then carry on".

I am grateful for people's caution, however, so although it's annoying it's better than the zoom-past-just-clipping-me-and-then-screeching-to-a-halt-as-an-oncoming-car-appears bridgade.

I've always tended to not wave folks past which is only down to an "incident" with a horse many years ago while I was riding a motorcycle. Maybe I should resume doing it.

I'm grateful for people's caution and I'm Joe Cautious myself whether I'm on the bike, motorbike or the skip... sorry car. However in this, and other cases I'm sure many of us have experienced, it points to a wider issue of general poor driving.... imho anyway.

I will not wave people past as I firmly believe that the overtaker has all the responsibility for making a safe pass and it is nothing to do with me. After all, there is no right to overtake.
A driver behind may well take my moving from two abreast to single file as an invitation to overtake, but that is up to them.
