Decide what you are going to do with the bike. Its not set in stone that you cant upgrade or replace the bike if your aspirations change. I would get a bike with a sub compact crank48/32 46/30 and a 11-34/36 cass. Wide tyre capacity 40-45mm makes for a very comfy ride. Lastly and most importantly a bike that feels comfortable to get on ride

Mostly on smooth surfaces.
Don't really need shocks.

Best bang for your buck is likely to be something from Decathlon or the Boardman range at Halfords / Cycle Republic. Both ranges offer some excellent bikes.

There are different types of hybrids, so what type of riding are you going to be doing? Mainly road, or cycle paths, or light trails? What budget are you thinking of spending?

Make a list what do you want to do and what do you want from the bike and what your budget is. Then armed with a list see what's about and if it fits the bill. Keep an open mind as to which one you like. See if the local bike shop has anything and if so ask for advice you don't have to buy on the day. Decathlon is well worth a look for sure if you have one near. Try a few out if you can as it always helps even if rules one out.
