Hybrid wanted, but how many!

Not ever had a hybrid but now looking for the occasional track/trail riding.

My current bike is a tourer but I'm looking for something a little more 'tougher' - all the hybrids I've looked at seem to be more like road bikes with flat bars.

Do I need to be looking more at mountain bikes?

Have you looked at any cyclo-cross (cx) bikes?

Or a 29er? Or a 700c hybrid like a giant roam or specialized crosstrail. What's the budget? If wanting drop bars, cx as suggested or one of these
