I have an old reliable Claud Butler Dolomite hybrid with a 7 speed cassette on rear wheel which is the screw-in type.I need to replace the both wheels as they are worn out. I have had this old workhorse from new. The problem is that I cannot find any suitable wheels for this old steed unless I go to 10 speed. Whether this would be an option and would a 10 speed fit the frame is the question.I need wheels that are bomb proof and cheap but can I find any--no!. Does anyone know of a source for these wheels. I need something between a cross and a mountain bike wheel. Road bike wheels might not stand the punishment I would give them. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You can break an 8 speed cassette to a 7 speed easily. You'll just need a couple of spacers. 8 speed spacers are 3.0mm and 7 speed 3.1mm. It's not enough to affect shifting so you could get any wheel. Most road wheels are quite tough.

Getting rim braked 29er wheels will be rare
