I had my bike serviced last week, which included having a new headset bearing fitted.
Whilst on the FNRttC at stupid past bonkers chocolate buttons a-clock my bike developed a rattle, at first the rattle only appeared on the rough tarmac, then gradually got worse and became a consistent and persistent light rattling noise what was eating way at my brain cells for last 30 miles of the ride.
I kept looking from where the noise was coming but couldn't find it, though it sounded like it was coming from the front of the bike, and so I got it into my head it was coming from the headset and I began to rue the very existence of my LBS, the mechanic that fitted it, the owners of the shop, all their children and I placed a curse on the entire family.
Yesterday, after having checked the bike over and tightened stuff up, I rode part of the London Ride 100 route, I had hoped the rattle had gone, but no! It had gotten worse, and became a cancer in my ear, it was so bad my wife could hear it, and people in cars were staring at me and complaining about noise pollution.
I soldiered on, like the brave little man that I am, and when I was approaching Leith Hill. I stood up to pedal to get a bit of momentum, and discovered that when I lifted my bum out of the saddle the noise got louder! What The Actual Feck?
I stopped to investigate further to find, that the tension nut on my Brooks saddle was loose and was vibrating backwards and forward on the bolt. It couldn't be....it was. I little tweak and peace and quite was restored to the Surrey Hills, car drivers were smiling and waving cheerily to me, people in houses were able to open their windows, the birds came back to sing in the woods and I was able to enjoy the rest of my ride up Leith Hill and onwards and upward to Box Hill.
What a Pillock!
