The elegant Cleg
One of the joys of the highlands, you normally just feel a sharp pin prick and look down to see a spot of blood, but I captured this little beauty in relaxed mood
I once met the insect physiologist Sir Vincent Wigglesworth who spent most of his life studying the S American bloodsucker Rhodnius prolixus. He did a rather odd set of experiments where he chopped the heads off two of them, stuck the bodies together and showed that one body could make the other moult. They had to fed on blood, so he used to stick them on his arms to feed - unfortunately, he developed an allergy to them, so spent the rest of his career developing nasty boils any time he got bitten.
