I'm using a Thinkpad T410 with Win7pro bought secondhand via Tier1, only started using it as a stop gap a few years ago. Almost always just on mains power, the battery doesn't last very long. It has also begun shutting off due to over heating if the 'graphics' card gets heavy use.

Have you checked it for dust? I've opened up old laptops to find what's basically a felt pad clogging up the fan. Once removed they're a lot happier!
