There i was yesterday going down this road at 31mph in a 30mph zone when the car behind blasted me on the horn. He eventually overtook, then i caught up with the fellow when he had to give way to oncoming traffic and asked him why he blasted me. He said that i was in the middle of the road stopping him from overtaking and that i should've been up to the kerb. I told him that i was riding in a primary position for my own safety as weaving back and forth passing parked cars wasn't as safe for me as cycling away from parked cars in a straight line. I also asked him why he felt the need to overtake me when i was myself breaking the speed limit. He wasn't impressed so i told him i'd been advised to ride in such a way by forum members on here:whistle:. Then i advised him to look it up on Cycle Chat about primary and secondary riding positions. I wonder if he looked it up?

It really annoys me that so many motorists try to overtake cyclists even when the latter are doing at least the speed limit . It's because the motorists know damn well that the cyclist can't do anything about it. Motorists are far less likely to try that stunt on another motorist.

Had it done once when travelling at 35mph, downhill, just as fast as the lorry in front. With me moving out every now and then, into view of the driver in front.
Car driver got impatient, over the double white lines into the path of a bus coming the other way. He'd no where to go, so onto the brakes and the horn.

Had a guy at work ranting on about this so excused myself and crossed to computer....

Entered the Institute of Advanced Motorists website and pointed out the following:
Cyclists are advised to take a prominent position in the road well ahead of any manoeuvre to ensure
they are in the right place at the right time. If they ride in the middle of the road it is probably not to
obstruct your path, but to ensure that they are seen by you and by other motorists.
Cyclists often rideat some distance from the kerb to avoid drains and potholes and to discourage motorists from
squeezing them on narrow roads. It is not in their interest to delay motorists deliberately.
Remembertoo that their ability to signal is limited compared to ours, so try to anticipate what they might do from
the position they have taken on the road. Please be patient

Then pointed out that I was concerned that he was unaware of this and hw ironic it was that my "bad cycling" was endorsed by the IAM, but his self proclaimed "good driving" was not

Kept him quiet for a few hours

@Cunobelin , something like that in Australia would be nice. A quick search only found this:

There's an Australian Institute of Advanced Motorists, although it only seems to have an office in the state of Tasmania, the web page was last updated over 2 years ago, and it only gives a landline phone number and no email address. I could find no online information giving guidance on better driving, like the web page you cited. That seems to be the status of "advanced motoring" in Australia .

Dunno, I've been overtaken by other drivers when driving at the speed limit on our housing estate (20mph). There's a couple of mini roundabouts & idiots often shortcut it to try and pass me as I navigate it correctly. Another classic is being undertaken when allowing a full lane on a dual carriageway to a cyclists I'm passing.

I see a lot more inconsiderate and impatient driving focussed at other drivers, than I experience as a cyclist, and that keeps me a little saner as I know it's not specific hatred towards a bike, but just knuckledragging in general.

Likewise although I was behind a bus and the Golf driver decided to ram his point home by passing close enough to hit my handlebars with his wing mirror hard enough to fold it in. Not sure how I stayed on, he was rather lucky I didn't catch up with him to be honest (I'd have given him a stern staring at or some such)

Ive never had it happen to me but I am the sort of guy who would just lay my bike down in the middle of the road and go back and quietly discuss it with the driver, regardless what traffic was behind him. I just dont get intimidated. On the other hand I am also happy to give an apologetic wave if Im in the wrong.

You were right to stand your ground. Weaving all over the place is dangerous and causes even more problems.

Had one classic example of this with the added benefit of instant karma. Prat in a vectra, just had to overtake on a twisty, fast downhill road (double whites), even though I was at the time doing 60kph+, so in no way holding him up (it was a 40 limit zone). I could hear him revving and upon looking he was about 4ft from my wheel. He then proceeded to overtake me with a blind bend coming up. I immediately put on the anchors and shouted at him, just to see him plough into the front of a lorry. He did manage to put the brakes on but locked up whereby he just couldn't steer out of the way. Police turned up and were less than impressed. He tried to blame me, but other drivers behind him didn't back him up, plus the lorry driver had it all on dashcam. I received a letter from the police that he'd been done for careless driving, 6pts and a hefty fine.

Karma's a bitch isn't it...you twat!

I hope the truck driver was ok.

Best one I remember was on the 'When I'm 64 Audax' last year. Young driver in a fiesta decided to pass myself, @phantasmagoriana and @Andrew Br on a blind bend at full acceleration blaring his horn. Of course he overcooked the corner on the soggy road, clipped the outside curb and then slid back across the road in front of us before planting bonnet first into a tree.

No injuries but he was rather sheepish when we checked he was ok
