I can confirm that being hit by a car at 30mph hurts!

Yesterday I got taken out on my commute to work in Bournemouth. I had just entered a rb to continue straight on when a car entered from by left without seeing me until I was on her bonnet!
That was not a nice feeling! I was looking at the car & knew they hadn't seen me because they accellerated to (I assume) beat the car that was about 10m behind me! ( I had 2 fronts & 2 back lights Bright orange top & ankle reflectors) Hit my head twice on the road & kerb (yes I was wearing a helmet!) and have suffered lots of grazes, cuts, bumps & lumps and my Secteur is 'Donald Ducked' I also had the opportunity to have a ride in an ambulance :rolleyes:to the local A&E where xrays showed nothing broken just a 'ruptured calf' wrenched shoulder & a sore back!
Ironically I feel very lucky, it could have been a lot worse, but now I've got to sort out all the legal stuff.....and I'm missing my bike already, its the one I did LeJoG on & you do get attached to them:hugs:Tony

Ouch! Glad you're not too badly hurt and hope all the aches fade quickly. Good luck with the legal stuff, I hope the driver pays up quickly and you get a new bike.

You do get attached to bikes and then some git trashes it!

Hope your injuries heal quickly and all the legal stuff goes smoothly. Presuming they have insurance it shouldnt be a problem as the car driver has to be totally to blame.

Damn, it hurts just reading that.

I very nearly had a similar one a few years ago, fortunately, the berk who tried to take me out had a passenger whose warning screams I could hear from my position 10m 5m 1m 30cm 5cm in front of the car. When he stopped, with his bumper against me foot, I got off, leaving the bike where it was resting against his car, walked round to the driver's window and said, in a most polite shout, "If you can't see a fat **** in a bright yellow coat right in front of you, then maybe you should think about quitting driving"

In defence of these motons, the issue is sometimes** one of car design where the manufacturers make the A-pillars so wide (in the name of occupant safety) that they can completely obscure a cyclist / motorbike. The angle from the driver's head through the A-pillar is, unfortunately, often exactly where a cyclist would be on a roundabout. Whilst there is a limit to the field of vision which the A-pillar should obscure, manufacturers use a get-out which relates to the days when cars had quarter-lights on their windows, so any pillar which is in the glass area of the door doesn't count as a part of the A-pillar.

Unfortunately, any voice raised against the design of modern cars is lost in the wilderness, drowned out by a chorus of "I'm all right, Jack, pull up the ladder" voices who don't give a stuff about anything as long as their car has a 5 star Euro-NCAP rating.

**It is also that sometimes they just don't see us, I'm sure that I'm not the only one who has had a driver who stared straight at me through his side window as he pulled out on a mini roundabout.

I hope that the OP recovers quickly from the crash.

In relation to the above, there certainly is an issue with pillars partially obscuring the view. However, if the car is moving towards the roundabout, there should be plenty of time to check several times to the right and any cyclist in the blind spot would almost certainly have moved out of it. Even if the car is stationary, waiting for traffic, surely a few looks to the right would be enough to identify a cyclist even if they were moving in and out of the blind area?

I think the problem is that some motorists don't check the roundabout on the approach, the first time they actually look properly is as they are about to enter and then have to make a split-second decision based upon one look to the right as they are about to roll into the junction.

That's happened to me. Be careful with injuries and keep an eye on any joints - they can be problematic, and you may not know for a few weeks - like shoulders.

Glad you are relatively OK.

RIP secteur. PS If you get a full replacement, see if you can keep the old bike, then replace the frame/wheels/damaged parts and you'll have N+1 !

EEEKK !!

Glad your relatively ok

Did the police attend the incident ? as your OP does not say as i am sure you know you need as much evidence as you can get and keep track of any injuries as they appear as it may take a few days for some symptoms to appear .Also keep a record of any costs for out of pocket expenses such as travel, lost pay, medical costs as well as the cost of the most important thing .... a new bike !!.

That is bad news, I don't know what it is about roundabouts but they do seem to inflict temporary blindness in people. I came within an inch of being taken our by an elderly driver 3 weeks ago, and yesterday another cyclist pulled out across my bows forcing me into emergency breaking mode. Both in broad daylight with me wearing a bright yellow top and bright orange helmet.

Hope you get your payout quickly, but its not always easy to replace a bike you have grown fond of.

Ouch- sounds awful. Wishing you a speedy recovery W. I know what you mean about getting so attached to the bike. But the main thing is you're OK(ish)!

christ hope you feel better soon.

you seem to be like me in hitting a car daoes minimal damage (cuts, bruises and bumps) and ditching it yourself causes major bits (like fractures and dislocations!!!)

the police should have shown up at a injury RTA but even so the driver is at fault so all should be sorted out easily for you.
