Speaking of Spanish wine, if you want great(ish) wine at an (almost) affordable price, this is worth finding:

Seriously, it is very good value for money. The Petit Verdot is superb.
But is it expensive enough to satisfy Abbers?
I'm not a wine snob and there are many (mainly Aussie) wines that have a consistent flavour, reasonably priced. I think I've drunk most of them over the years. But yes, those wines are the equivalent of eating out at a decent chain rather than going to an independent restaurant. You're hardly going to be surprised, which is precisely why they are successful, mainstream brands.
Having said that, I think I've only once come across a (red) wine that I couldn't drink.
