Obviously it's wrong punching the wing mirror but like someone said sometimes people just lose it. I would say i'm generally calm cycling to and from work. One time though someone was purposely swerving infront of me and if i'd caught him I dare say I would have put my fist through his window, or at least tried lol.

In other words were all human and shoot happens.

Got to say guys...leave it be............ fly past them a few minutes later waving......oh that will get them....

As said mirrors are chuffingly expensive - unless you are BCF/CTC insured and didn't be a d1ck then you might be OK....don't do it....... if you really hit it, then you'll be paying.............

Respond effectively...report idiot drivers - just ask for it to be logged...... get two and they will get a visit - they usually get a visit on one log....

Have to say I'm amazed to see people posting on here who seem to see something morally reprehensible in whacking someone's car when they've just decided to rank their convenience above another human being's life. And then compounded it by snarling when challenged.

Such people are shoots. Are they to be allowed to behave in this way with impunity?

There are practical issues, to be sure.

If you use the same route daily, there's a risk someone with 2 tons of metal and a grudge will spot you again.
There's a risk you'll be id'd on cctv, brought to book, and made to pay.
There's a risk they'll become even worse ****s against cyclists in future.

These are all considerations to be borne in mind.

But is there anything morally wrong in 'causing criminal damage' in such a situation? Hell no, at least as far from where I'm sitting. Let these shoots know they can't act with this level of disdain for other people's lives with impunity.

Maybe next time they're considering ignoring someone else's safety 'because they're in such a hurry darling' they'll stop and think 'last time I did that it cost me £850', and think again.

Fook 'em.

I hope she don't bear grudges ... they are the worst....
(my emphasis)

Though for reasons expressed, I try not to contribute to a "war" (If I have an issue, I try to put the point verbally - politely but firmly), the deliberate grudge-bearing motorists are usually slow-witted and easy to avoid - their thought patterns go into a single minded "revenge" and are predictable to say the least. Predictable is good however, from a survivalist point of view.

The real menace are the ones who look at you "gone out" if you have a go after a near miss. The ones who have no idea what they have done and why you are angry. The ones who think that it is "your fault for being in the middle of the road" (primary position). The ones who GENUINELY believe that they have done nothing wrong. THEY are the ones that I fear.

But he is unlikely to have caused any damage at all - just inconvenience as the stupid driver will proabably have had to get out of the car to snap the mirror back into its position. As he said, most mirrors are designed to allow themselves to be flipped forwards, just to avoid damage in this kind of situation.

I love the idea of opening the back doors, though...

(And the milk, but that's really evil... )

I never in a zillion years imagined this would generate so much polarisation of opinion.

I love my short (10-15 mile) commute, and it's been a steep learning curve at times, but 99% of the time I believe all road users get along fine and happily with each other.

Ok, I lost it for a mo yesterday, and guilty as charged, but again, I will learn from the opinions expressed in this thread and that is the value of forums like this!

(I'm quite good the rest of the time, and I remain convinced I'm the only cyclist in London who obeys red lights, but that belongs in innumerable other threads…)

So, thank you all people, genuinely.

I can completely understand the reaction, but over the last couple of years i have more or less learned to reset the clock after each event, rather than letting them build up into a big explosion of anger.

I'm now a firm believer that if somebody does something like that to me their time will come, sooner or later they will stop getting away with it.

Ditto.

Although there's a chavvy Corsa who lives near me that doesn't get enough calcium.
