Sorted, anyone know how to stop the avatars being cropped?

Make them fit into a square 200px x 200px

Haven't got Microsoft Paint or Adobe Photoshop... so bit stuck!

There's lots of free cross-platform image editing software available:
Gimpshop a Photoshop look alike doctored from the Gimp
The Gimp - the original high powered open source image editor.
will do for starters.

You could google for web based image editors.
