Yeah, it's grim.

Take a bike, go to Garnlydan just up the road, take the B4560 and go 'over the top' the view down into the Usk valley and over Llangorse Lake is quite something. Go to the White Swan in Llanfrynach for lunch and a pint or two, very nice.

Mind you, you'll probably be working the whole time...

The nearest I have been to Merthyr was many years ago when I ended up at a place called Radyr, a few miles north of Cardiff. The mines where still working then and the place wasn't pretty. So I can see why you may not like the place, but why have you got to go there?

I spent a whole week there one afternoon.

This sounds pretentious, but I've never been anywhere I couldn't find something interesting to do. I think its all about attitude. Even in the toughest of areas not everyone is bad... so what do they do? Where do they go? Failing that, try Geocaching to find hidden spots, or just crack open the old OS map. Sit in a pub, sit in a cafe. There's SOMETHING to do.
