the thing with potholes is you cant blame the local council for the potholes appearing, but the amount of potholes is amazingly out of this world.
we do try and fill them, we try and get round them as fast as we can, but there are millions out there, not just that, its the way they form, 1 day its a crack and the next its a crater, i personally blame the state of the tarmac when it is mixed in the foundry, i think its cheap crap.
but as a cyclist myself i just keep an eye out for them and report them

Well I'd just like to say thank you for doing your job. It's certainly appreciated by me.

I've had good responses from reports I've made via Fillthathole (now available on iphone!) even if they don't update the site to say its been filled.

my fault cos they appear?? how do you work that out?
they are caused by rain that freezes and then expands under the tarmac which then leads to cracks, then the process is repeated and the potholes appear.
plus in the winter time we have the addition of winter gritting that adds to the problem, the salt eats away at the road, but is needed to stop the ice forming on top of the road....no win battle really....

On my commute last week I rode down one of my regular roads and there was a council van parked up and a dozen potholes had been filled in with white gas rising off them. The time - about 8:25am. It's very hit and miss how fast they fill them in I've had ones take a couple of months (on main roads) and others within 48hrs. One of my complaints is that on a steep road with a fast descent that is a main road they keep on just plugging the pot holes rather than doing a section. Every month it deteriorates and deteriorates.

its amazing how many ppl blame the council, we only have so many men, and we can only fill what we can in a day, and we have 100's and 100's ofmiles of roads!!
then there's the pavements to sort out as well!!!!
we have claims going in for potholes in the roads,
potholes in the pavements,
grit salt that has rusted cars,
gritsalt that has eaten through a new tarmac driveway!!!
grit that has cracked windscreens while spreading
not enough grit being put down and some1 has slipped or skidded on ice....
i tell you the council does get a raw deal at times.......

they only plug it cos its probably due to be done in the near future, and they wont waste money in doing a full repair when it is in the pipeline for full resurface.
the white gas is only steam, when tarmac hits the cold air orafter it has been rolled, it does react to the cold air which causes the steam

:hyper: I knew there was someone to blame for the potholes around me. Why have you left the two foot square by three inch deep one on my regular loop? Do you not think I pay enough council tax? Don't come whining to me about you being a mere 280 miles from Chez Attrick, it just won,t wash ... oh no.

My mother warned me about people like you, you know. :hyper:

Well, yeah. But you just blamed the poor state of the original tarmac when it was mixed, and that presumably is done by someone the council contracts.

Frankly, though, as cyclists it's all our fault for not paying road tax. ;-)

the tarmac quarry is for every council down here, we cant pic and choose where we go to pick up tarmac lol, if we traveled for 4 hours to pick up the tarmac then nothing would be done in a day lol.

Do you take everyone to be idiots? If you mean near future as in the next ten years, then yes. I check the road carefully on the annual planned work by the council and sadly it is never on. Another section was due to be done three years ago and was delayed for two financial years due to the huge amount of national gas work going on and was done last year. I'm not that fussed in general, but as a braking area on a main road that is a steep downhill and a bend, it really should be slightly higher up the very long list of priorities. I said all this on the pothole reports and it takes them a long time even to fill the potholes. Flat roads, side roads I'm quite willing to accept a large number of potholes.

As for wasting money on a resurface, you'd be surprised. There are a number of documented cases of redone work. How it works is the roads are resurfaced on a ward by ward basis. Each ward gets an allocated amount of resources and gets stuff resurfaced even if it is less urgent. So political bickering stops an efficient system. If you do a full analysis of all the planned roads (and especially pavements) done every year it's done on a very arbitrary basis. It's not bad that what is resurfaced is done, it's just some things are a lot less urgent than others.

For every pothole you fill in another one opens up anyway. Does it not feel like you are fighting a losing battle?

Don't worry folk. Budgets might be getting cut, roads might be getting worse, so we'll all have to hang our road bikes up, and get a bling full susser for the new MTB courses that are being created. !!!
