Yep, the Health and Safety police will be after her now. I bet she is terrified.

Hmmm, I suspect there are plenty of, say, Dutch, or Indian people who would think "eh? what's wrong with that?". Is carrying your child that way inherently dangerous (if you ride carefully) or is it really that it's dangerous because of all the idiots around you... In which case, it's the idiots who need addressing... And those idiots could equally well take out someone carrying a kid in a kid seat...

Not saying I'd do it, just that in many parts of the world bikes carry whole families or huge loads, quite safely. I've seen a lad here in York riding an old butchers bike, with his mate sitting in the basket holder on the front and all I could could think was hey, neat solution!

Exactly, although if corporal punishment for Elle is proposed I volunteer.

You got that right. My brother-in-law, his wife plus their 2 kids were riding on the same motorbike in Pakistan (no helmets, of course). Organised chaos is how you might describe some of the roads over there.

I remember many a happy cycle ride, as a child, perched on the cross bar or handle bars of my dad's bicycle, shouting out for him to "Go faster! Faster!" Happy days!

i dont think that becuase it's acceptable to do it in india, that it makes it ok to do it here. They wipe their bums with their hands remember! i'ts dangerous to do it anywhere in the world really. its not about being overly protective or too PC, its about common sense

Though a bit of me says the kid should be in a proper bike seat... the other bit of me looks at her face and wonders if the kids face is showing similar enjoyment. Maybe a celeb riding a bike would get through to some of the non cyclists about what they may be missing, more than the govenment/cycling organisations.

No. There's nothing inherently dangerous about carrying a load of stuff, including a kid, on a bike, if the rider is sensible and can handle the bike in that state. No more so than carrying a kid strapped into a seat in my opinion. What about one of those seats on the crossbar? Just because it's 'designed', it's somehow better than the roll pf pipe lagging I've seen on a bike round here, and which a guy perches his daughter on.

And there's nothing inherently wrong with wiping your bum with your hand, mate, if you wash your hand afterwards, and/or have tabboos about using that hand to eat with, as many cultures do. Anyway, as I said, even the Dutch seem to have got the hang of carrying more than one person on a bike, judging by the pics I've seen.
