I'm sure that TMS sounded more warm and fuzzy on Radio 4 LW, i get it clear as a bell on DAB but it's just not the same.
I even miss the interruption for the shipping forecast.
Modern life is rubbish.

Each time I autotune the TV I get about 80 channels and have to sit there and deselect about 50 of them.

There seems to be one that broadcasts porn but only from 4-5 am, Gay Rabbit which seems to be a dating version of ceefax and then lots of people standing there selling you stuff in a format that is like a gameshow but without the game and where you pay for the prize yourself.

We've got the opposite problem, sort of. When Mum and Dad bought their first flat-screen telly a few years ago, they invested in a new aerial so they could get all the Freeview channels from the Waltham (East Midlands) transmitter. Come switchoff time, the powers that be cranked up the power, so much so that their aerial can now happily pick up Sutton Coldfield (West Midlands), too.

Trouble is, the Sutton Coldfield multiplexes are on lower channel numbers than Waltham, and their telly, despite being Panasonic, had no way of manually tuning or selecting the region. So come retune time, it happily put all the West Midlands channels on the early numbers, then the East Midlands channels up in the 800s. So the local news on channel 1 was people from Dudlooooy moaning about being called Brummies (possibly), and not people from Nottingham moaning about being shot, the A453 roadworks or some new council initiative that 'they've been doing in Derby for years' according to Mum.

They've since got a newer telly that allows region selection, so the problem's now moot, but still.

I've left them there. At least that way you know that if you hit one of those channels when channel-hopping, there's really nothing on and one should go and get a life, or something.

We've got freeview, but I hardly ever actually turn the telly on tbh. I watch most of what I want to watch on the PC or on a tablet.

Eighty channels and not a damn thing worth watching on TV...
You are not trying hard enough!

I only get Freeview 'light' so I am restricted to about 10 channels but I can still find plenty of interesting programmes.

I am currently watching a series about the history of Britain. I recently watched a scary documentary about the construction of the tallest building in China, the Shanghai Tower. I just watched part one of three about the Crossrail project, another fascinating Civil Engineering project. Music documentaries, wild life, sport ... Just skip the soaps, reality TV etc and look out for the interesting stuff that gets hidden away in the middle of the night and record that to watch at a more civilised time.

I'm enjoying the reshowing of 80s series 'Edge of Darkness' which I missed first time round because I was away at university at the time, TV-less.

I am recording a documentary about the Earth's atmosphere on BBC4 tonight.

I have a stock of films recorded for those nights when there actually isn't much of interest on. A selection of stuff from the bizarre - 'The Cook, the Thief ...' to more predictable, but still entertaining - 'Jackie Brown', and others which may turn out to be awful, or surprisingly good - a modern version of 'Wuthering Heights', 'The Fighter', and so on.

And for backup, I usually have a boxed DVD set of something or other. At the moment - 'Mad Men'.

But Mrs OTH comes in the room just as I getting through the dodgy section.
I feel it is a bit desperate once I go beyond channel 30 E4 and E4+1 are good on 28 and 29 but beyond that I start to think about sticking the radio on.

I do try to do something like that. A good backup of "Coast" (the Alice Roberts years) the odd QI I have not seen and then there is always "How its made".

With films I start off with this idea that about 60 films must go past each week that I can record for free and watch anytime, but whenever I goo to see what I have there is nothing I fancy there.

To be honest, I don't try at all. With the exception of a few afternoons each July, watching Le Tour I do not watch TV at all. Haven't in years.

Back when I was married and had cable, I came home after a night out to find my mother watching naked skydiving...

It's the German Film Problem. It could be a documentary about flower arranging in Dresden, but you can guarantee someone will walk through the door just as some woman gets 'em out.

As I mentioned above, I did not watch TV as a student. I used to have the radio on every evening while I was studying, programming, or assembling circuit boards. I didn't really miss it, but in those days we only had 4 channels so we did not have such a wide of programmes to choose from.
