Picked up a fixie today, got it for £80 re-back-braked and a new crank and chain.

start fixed. single speed won't give you "fixed experience".

I did the same but probably would have stayed SS if I hadn't had my freewheel fall apart on me but on retrospec, I'm glad and probably should have made the transition to fixed earlier.

Stay freewheel. There's no advantage to fixed gear if you pedal downhill anyway.

You are aware that use of the term "fixie" will result in excommunication to spend eternity with poor souls who have used the term "Campy" or have insulted leather saddles or have owned bikes that are not Black with gold luglining.
You are new to the club though so some leeway may be given on appeal
