 As of last Thursday night I am running Ubuntu with no safety net or Parachute. I have deleted the windows partition, extended the Ubuntu partition and deleted the Grub entry for Windows.

Good for you!

If I'm honest, as a user of Ubuntu and Windows, IMO I don't think I've reached the point yet where I can do without the MS product. I am a fan of Linux, but equally like Xp. And of course, the most important thing is whether all your fave apps can run under Ubuntu.

So my advice would be - don't burn your bridges: keep your option open. ;)

It appears that all I do on the computer Ubuntu can do, Windows was just taking up hard drive space and not being used.

What is this 'Windows' of which you speak?

I've only had Ubuntu on the laptop for a few months now (9.04 since Friday). Can't say I've missed xp for what I use it for, which involves CC quite a bit

Desktop has XP as my son uses an student version of office for his schoolwork and gaming.
Horses for courses I reckon

Ah, it's true.
However I am now at home and do have windows. The kitchen will get Ubuntu treatment today as Mrs.P is insistent that I fit the blackout blinds purchased some 2 months ago. So Windows will stay but I won't have to look at or use it anymore.

The house doesn't come with AIS as it stays pretty much wherever I last left it. Even the Royal Mail can find it.

Ah, it is an interesting moment when it comes - the switch away from Windows.

In my case I had a spare machine with XP for ages. Then I had an XP virtual machine for the rare occasion where I needed some Windows software. Now I'm increasingly able to use Wine (the Windows compatibility layer) to run MS Word on those rare occasions where OpenOffice won't do.

I guess I could move away from Windows easily from the OS and application point of view - I actually prefer open office and firefox is well firefox. The eeexbuntu package for netbooks is superb.

The only thing I've found though is for video, windows seems to render better than I've managed to get it to look in Linux.

Something to do with Directdraw filters and synchronisation. I know there are multiple ways to render even in Windows and I guess this is why where supporterd video tends to look better in media player than it does in vlc..

I'm sure someone cleverer than me could sort it out.

Another problem is drivers (still). Support is still sometimes not all there (like video decoding acceleration).

Still the price is right.

Your right there, the hardware support can be a bit iffy sometimes, but its loads better than it used to be. Everything I have, or need to have, connected to the computer works fine, just need to be a bit careful if I buy any new bits. I had some minor problems getting codecs, but now I have them I don't have any problems with video. Like a lot of people I had some sound issues after upgrading to 9.04 but they soon got sorted and it all works fine now. The only other thing was yesterday when it tried to run a disc check as part of the boot sequence and could'nt finish the check it hung until I ran the disc check manually, when I deleted the windows partition and stretched the Ubuntu partition I had caused some corruption in one of the file systems, It had been booting and working normally until the disc check, then it wouldnt finish the boot check and would'nt start, its now starting and working normally.
