I woke up this morning to the sound of chainsaws and shouting, so, I looked outside and the neighbours were getting rid of their Laylandii, which has proceeded to blot out the sunlight for the last umpteen years!!
Admittedly, the view it has been covering all these years isn't amazingly exciting, but it doesn't matter, there is actually LIGHT again!!

Personally I would ban them from all residential areas, but that is just me.
What are your views on these trees and other similar speciaes??

They need controlling ! The flats opposite keep theirs in check.

A house in the road behind me had a disagreement with their next door neighbour for over 20 years so they planted a leylandii hedge. The trees grew so large we could see them over their house and they must have completely obscured the upstairs bedroom window. The neighbours finally moved out and they have now removed them.

Our next door neighbour also planted one which just grew and grew and we suddenly realised it was growing about 5 or 6 feet into our garden and started pruning our side regularly. I was glad when they finally decided to get rid of them.

The only place that I have ever seen them used quite well is in Northern Ireland where there seems to be much more trimming or growing a less vigorous variety where they form neatly clipped hedges.

Aaaagh! Leylandii - spawn of the devil :cursing: Hate them with a passion.

Fascinating history though - afik, nobody yet knows just how tall they can grow, as none have yet reached full maturity and died of old age!

They have their very own section in the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003 (part 8). This has the delightful nugget - that the law only applies to the parts of the hedge above ground, and not "to complaints about the effect of the roots of a high hedge." Damn - 1000's of subsidence claims would have been .... interesting.

My folks have them either side of the garden, but my dad loves using his chainsaw on them each year... chops them right down. Proper tree hacker !

Hate 'em. Years ago neighbours put some at the bottom border with our garden. Fortunately we are up-sun of them so if they let them grow it's their loss.

They do indeed, even when fresh and green. I was at a friend's house in the autumn for a BBQ and he was getting rid of prunings in a big fire kettle. He told a story of someone who was pruning some with a bonfire in range, not realising that they burn green, ended up setting fire to his hedge....

I never understood how people got into bitter disputes with neighbours over these things. If they're a problem, surely it's easy enough to kill them, then just deny all responsibility. They might know, but can they prove?
