Cutting a healthy dog's tail off for no reason is disgusting and illegal.

It's not illegal if the dog is to be used for specified activities and only certain breeds can have their tails docked.

In England the following can be docked:

1. Hunt point retrieve breeds of any type or combination of types.

2. Spaniels of any type or combination of types.

3. Terriers of any type or combination of types.

In Wales the following can be docked:

1. Spaniels of the following breeds: English Springer Spaniel, Welsh Springer Spaniel and Cocker Spaniel, but not combinations of breeds

2. Terriers of the following breeds: Jack Russell Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Lakeland Terrier, Norfolk Terrier, but not combinations of breeds

3. Hunt point retrievers of the following breeds:

Braque Italian, Brittany, German Long Haired Pointer, German Short Haired Pointer, German Wire Haired Pointer, Hungarian Vizsla, Hungarian Wire Haired Vizsla, Italian Spinone, Spanish Water Dog, Weimaraner, Korthals Griffon, Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer, Large Munsterlander, Small Munsterlander.

It remains the prerogative of a veterinary surgeon as to whether he chooses to dock a dog’s tail or not.

No I didn't. I don't for a moment believe that brand's dog is a real working dog.

If you really want my true opinion, I don't think anyone should ever cut any dog's tail off unless the tail has been irretrievably injured, but I recognise that these kinds of fashionable animal mutilations take a long time to die away, as in horses having their tails removed for 'safety' when they are being driven.

Very upsetting in my experience. My parents used to breed Old English Sheepdogs and we had 4 of our own. Couldn't get them registered with the Kennel Club as pedigree unless their tails had been docked.
I suspect, or at least hope, the rule has changed, as the last few I have seen have had their tails.

@SD1 it looks like she will give you many happy hours of fun and mischief.

Thankfully the rules have indeed changed as far as mere pedigrees go. Vernon's list is misleading, in that it isn't the breed that determines this, but the use to which the dog is to be put. There's a fair bit of paperwork involved, and if a breeder supplies a docked dog without it they are committing a criminal offence, as is the person who acquires the dog.
It is breed that determines wherever it can be docked. The vet refused to dock my chihuahua retriever!! And yes I have got the paperwork. At the end of the day an unenforceable law. The breeder can never be sure the buyer is going to work the dog. The buyer may have every intentions of working the dog, as I do but what if for health reasons I couldn't? Should I put the dog down? Anyway this thread is about my pup not your PETA views. I don't give a sh**e what you think.

No I didn't [edit: I didn't 'shoot from the hip', why would I]. I don't for a moment believe that brand's dog is a real working dog.

And what do you think it is? A leprechaun? If you knew what working dog looked like you wouldn't make such a silly billy comment.

I can't abide PETA, they are shite. If your dog has its tail, then all is well. Looks like a fine dog, although I can't stand spaniels personally.
It hasn't got all its tail the part that gets most damage in undergrowth has been removed ie the end. Removed between 3-5 days without an anesthetic and dew claws done at the same time again no anesthetic. In both cases the dog doesn't feel anything. As in doesn't wake up if asleep. I can't afford to take it to the vet every time she damages her tail. Specially as its very hard and expensive to get insurance for any gun dog. Note it doesn't matter what the injury or illness is they won't insure you....animal rights/PETA? Seen to many Springers with blood on their tails.

Keep ya fit will that little sweetie..
my sister has one, its nuclear powered lol..
I am having difficulty believing some of the figures I read for how much time you should exercise them for. Staggeringly low. As little as 20 mins. No consideration for mental health. She (and I) would go bonkers if I could only exercise her for 1.5 hours a day. 3 hours (in total) leaves her with far to much energy and that's exercising her off the lead.
