As for Mad Doug Biker, if you feel strongly about horses dying, by all means start another thread, but it's pretty nasty hijacking this one.

He did apologise further back, so can be forgiven IMO.

As Arch says, it happens that fit young people collapse. A schoolmate, a very fit long distance runner, was just completing a run and had arrived back at the school playing in front of many of us when he collapsed. Sadly he died. It's very hopeful that in this case the footballer received instant medical attention and probably has a much better chance of survival with more modern medicine available.

WRT footballers there is Asa Hartford "who became famous for failing a medical examination due to the discovery of a heart condition which put paid to a high profile transfer to Leeds United in November 1971." Nevertheless he went to have a successful career at the top level.

Indeed. Young people collapse from undiagnosed heart conditions more frequently than many people think. This one gets all the attention because he happens to be paid to kick a ball.

Here's hoping everybody who collapses gets better, eh?

Agreed.

But if it gets things done and helps diagnose heart conditions in the young early and, inturn, save lives, then the attention will at least be worth it.

A family in our village who's son who collapsed during a squash game never realised he had a congenital heart defect which hadn't been picked up.... but then with a sporty, fit, healthy 17 year-old they never thought there was a problem. You never know what's round the corner so enjoy today... tomorrow's a long way away.

Can we leave the tit-for-tat out of the thread please - it's been addressed - draw a line under it.

Let's get back to the OP and related issues.

Thanks,
Shaun

I'm not a fan of football, and at times I have been very unimpressed with some football fans, but I was quite moved by the shots taken in the stadium while the medics were fighting to save the player's life on the pitch. It is true that people die of such things all the time, but we don't often get confronted by it like that. I hope he makes a full recovery.

(I know we aren't supposed to be taking about the horses at Cheltenham, but I saw a report before the meeting started and they were fully aware of how hard the ground was, and had been spraying millions of gallons of water on the course to try and soften it, to no avail. I was left with no doubt that they half-expected several dead horses and that's what they got. Very nasty! But yes, that's for another thread.)
