I can't imagine making a big purchase without consulting the other half, if only to share the excitement of choosing!

650c wheels. Are they more common over the pond ? I've never seen a pair in real life here.

It's because of the frame geometry and my size (small). I may find it isn't such a bargain once I have to source the wheels! But then again, I'll only need one pair.

It's only 300 quid, I can't imagine it would cause you any financial hardship so there's no problem really is there?

Since it is coming out of a joint account you could always go with the letter from Planet X idea and say that its a top quality frame worth a couple of thousand at least and the 300 quid, or Canadian dollar equivalent, is import duty/ tax or some such stuff.

I never thought it would be really. Just let us know what she says when you tell her, if she's anything like my wife then she won't mind at all, even if it is bike 7.

In fact it might be worth going with the splendid Planet X letter idea just to amuse her, because I'm sure she wouldn't be taken in by it.

When is a good time to bring up the subject?

 I worry about this every 6 months or so - just when I've bought another frame/bike.

Usually, I keep quiet and hope for the best.

You could tell your OH that, as the frame is reduced by 57%, you are, in effect, saving money.

I knew someone who bought a TT bike with 650c wheels, which I think he bought from America. He is incredibly tight, and for some reason the 650c wheels made the bike cheaper. Is there some stipulation that bans 650c wheels in some races?

I had a colleague at my last job who was persuaded to buy a Giant MTB. He kept it spotless and then got into replacing the components with higher quality bits that looked similar. He'd get Wiggle to deliver the parts to work and keep the old parts in a cupboard so that his girlfriend wouldn't know. She would not have approved. Unfortunately, his brother-in-law blabbed. Then he lost interest in the bike somewhat and we noticed it gradually getting dirtier. He and his girlfriend aren't together any more, although I doubt that was the reason for the split.
