I know we camera cyclists go out looking for trouble, but this was ridiculous!

So there I was riding along Camberwell Road having left work early and enjoying the weather and heading for a bit of a spin up to Crystal Palace, the closest approximation to a hill that South London seems to have on offer. All of a sudden I hear an almighty crash and watch how a bus heading the other way decapitates a rather large tree and grinds to a halt on the pavement opposite. Turns out the initial crash I heard was the demolition of a lamppost a few metres before the tree. Miraculously nobody appears seriously hurt - thankfully the pavement seems to have been empty at the time. Lots of screaming from the passengers on the bus, but no visible injuries.
As it happens I have a handlebar mounted video camera so I immediately review the footage on my phone, conclude it may be useful and go over to offer it to the bus company and the police. Unfortunately while the footage shows the impact with the tree, everything before that is obscured by vehicles in front of me. So it's hard to verify or refute the driver's claim that he was swerving to avoid a cyclist (onto the pavement???). I could find no other vehicles which might be implicated in the crash, but still, if the video can be of some use I'll be happy.
Scary stuff anyway.

The lessons I draw from this:
1. Camera cyclists don't always seek out trouble, sometimes trouble comes looking for us.
2. camera footage may be useful for more than just youtube or roadsafe.
3. Never, ever undertake a bus!

I curtailed my ride and headed straight home. Avoiding bus routes! Call me sentimental, but incidents like this make time spent with family seem more important than frivolous hill climbs.

"Post the video or it didn't happen"? I'll let the Met peruse it first, but promise to post it at some later date - tree decapitation by bus is pretty dramatic, trust me, it's worth the wait! ;-)
Here's a photo, though it fails to do the drama justice:

BTW lots of hills in south london, you just need to go further south

Anerley hill is a rough 200ft climb over a mile.
Riddlesdown road 210ft over a mile
Purley downs road 270ft over a mile
Sanderstead hill 290ft over a mile
Station road (woldingham) 320ft over a mile
biggin hill 400ft over a mile
Titsey Hill 432ft over a mile

There are many more that I have not included.

Thanks Gaz, I'll have to check some of them out sometime. Of those I only know Annerly hill, too busy for my liking. Hence my preference for College Road up from Dulwich. The others you list are probably a bit too far to string into my ride home from the City to Wandsworth Common, but on a nice sunny day who knows...

.... and don't forget London's only Alp, Shooters Hill SE18, the most northerly alpine fold, an impressive 434ft which if you come up from the Woolwich ferry (which is of course is at sea level) it's the highest climb over a mile available within the M25

Depending on the bus company it should have some CCTV on board. If his claims are to be proven it will hopefully be on that. Strange angle to end up at but could have been due to having to (over)correct.

Sorry, looks like I'll have to renege on the promised video. The damned sd card seems corrupted, I can watch the footage but can't copy it to PC, tablet or phone, or edit it, let alone get it onto a cd, dvd or youtube, so it looks like I'll just have to hand over the card to the police. Not optimistic about ever seeing it again after that. :-(

Anyone so inclined will just have to visualise the surreal sight of a largely intact c5m long crown of a tree surfing the roof of a double decker bus...
