Snow chains would be a waste of money. Let's face it, we don't normally get snow and certainly not enough where chains would actually work.

Last significant snowfall worthy of chains was 15 years ago.

However, scooting past a wheel-spinning, £30k 4x4 whilst on a £50 MTB is priceless!

You seem like a real cheapskate.

Car manufactuers should be made to supply new cars with chains which could be kept with the spare wheel and inspected as part of the MOT.

Cars have spare wheels, jacks and wheel braces should a tyre suffer a puncture. Are you saying that because your tyres never get a puncture these are a waste of money?

Car drivers also spend a shed load on break down cover as well which many never use. This is a waste of money as cars are so much more reliable these days. Self insuring is much more cost effective.

The problem is that many drivers see themselves as perfect drivers who can drive in any weather. Getting stuck represents failure. Thus their belief in their capabilities far exceeds their actual capabilities. So in poor weather many drivers misguidedly believe that their driving skills will not allow them to fail and get stuck. But of course they do get stuck and in doing so put their and others' safety at risk.

I don't think chains are a waste of money. They greatly improve traction of summer road tyres as are fitted to most cars, if truth be told, summer tyres without chains on snow or ice are pretty dangerous.

It is now that I wish I hadn't donated my (then rarely used) mountain bike two years ago to my workplace for use as a pool bike.

When I get back to work if this is going to be prolonged then I will enquire about borrowing my old bike and ordering some ice tyres for it.

Have taken a weeks leave as it is my nieces 21st this Saturday so I have been able to enjoy the eight inches of snow in Manchester (as opposed to the eight inches that is forecast to fall in Sussex/Surrey tonight).

As a precaution, however, I have put some knobblies on the mtb incase the road bike option is a bit risky come the morning - fingers crossed!

One of the best things about the snow was the admiration we got for just going out and doing our job - collecting recycling, using Maximus trikes. .

OT but like the idea of that. Is there any info. on the web anywhere about it? have Velovision done anything on it?

Is this it? http://www.stnicksfields.org.uk/recycling.php

That's us, yes. I don't think Velo Vision have covered it (although we shared a building up until the middle of last year), but it has covered the cycle courier company in York, who also use Maximuses (Maximi?) along with 8Freights, Yuba Mundos and the like.

We come into our own on the little terraced streets and some of the residential areas in the middle of the city which are not easy to get to in a big truck.

There is sometimes talk of some new photos, so my ugly mug may yet appear.;)

I will remember how much I love the snow when I get up at 230am to check if the main road is rideable tommorow. If it's no go I will have to leave at 3am.If it's ok a bit later.Very unpredicatble.Had to do the same this morning and left 20 mins earlier.

The pavement is just a lump of ice outside my house.Just saw one bloke fall over on it although he was busy punching the other bloke at the time.Good old next door neighbours can't hold their ale.

Lucky me,I was clearing the snow from the front when I caught this episode.

It was -3 at 7 pm tonight in Manchester - gonna be a cold one, and we are back to work tomorrow (finally)....MTB again - pavements/road then off road - keeping well away from the cars as our main roads are iced - all very 'white' and slippy - was out in the car earlier (had to collect my studded tyres as City Link couldn't get through - ironic eh...)

I had a great commute. The snow is now either loose brown stuff mixed with grit which is easy to ride in or compressed to hard white stuff on the untreated roads, with occasional shiny bits. And I'm getting more confident with my studded tyre so deliberately took some side roads today to test it out some.

I'm getting a bit tired of washing and lubing the bike every evening though.
