DS2 (age 10) said he wanted to cycle to school today. The point of doing his cycling proficientcy in the summer was so I could cycle to work. So him cycling meant I had no excuse not to, so packed the bag last night (only thing I forgot was a comb), no rain this morning so had to do it. Left earlier than I would normally with boys still at home (they're probably still watching the Murray/Nadal match I recorded and haven't gone to school ;)) and off I went. I've done about 100 miles since having new bike in July and prior to that haven't really cycled much for about 20 years. Got to the 2 mile mark and wondered whether I should give up and go home but thought by the time I'd done that I'd nearly be there. Was highly motivated near the end when I zoomed past the queuing cars where I would normally be waiting. 7 miles 33 minutes not bad for first time out. Drawback was the shower at work leaked everywhere so I ended mopping the floor and my cheeks are still beetroot coloured an hour later!

It gets easier. I found when I first started a commute of about the same length I was tired very quickly, stayed red for a bit during the day, etc. But over a period of six weeks, it becomes routine. You don't notice your change in fitness and end up looking for ways to extend your ride.

That sounds good because if I extend it I can go more off road into countryside which would be more enjoyable, though that will probably be on way home as I would like to leave same time as children - just to make sure they are ready for school on time! Cycling in rain will come when they are both at Senior school, I would not be happy for youngest cycling when wet on his own partly because there is a hill - you can get to nearly 30mph free wheeling I would worry about him stopping in the wet or indeed not being properly seen as the road is a 'tree tunnel'
