First things first, download this - http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-SystemCare-Free/3000-2086_4-10407614.html - and install & run it on your existing machine. It probably won't stop it crashing altogether, but it certainly won't hurt. Second, have you opened up the case lately? If not, you should: it's probably full of great pads of dust that are causing it to overheat, which may not be the only reason it's crashing, but certainly won't be helping. You can do both of those in about ten minutes, for zero cost, and they could well make a big difference.

Then, I would suggest, at least think about looking on ebay. People upgrade all the time, and their castoffs go for a penny in the pound. Look first and foremost at the seller's feedback. Several hundred ratings and 100%, you're almost certainly dealing with an ok seller. Then email them with an enquiry or two, just to get the cut of their jib. You should be able to get the kind of spec you're after for £100 without any real difficulty. The most important thing is RAM. Get yourself a machine with 8gb, or better yet 16, and it'll almost certainly have all the other stuff you're after. Personally I'd look for Dell, or HP or Lenovo. All their higher end stuff (which is what you'd be getting if you paid £100+ on ebay) is bulletproof.

But get your current machine as fit as possible for starters. If you can get that stabilised, it gives you a bit of breathing space to look for something better. Good luck.

There is a not-for-profit organisation in Hebden Bridge (DOT-COMmunICaTions) who recycle old I.T. equipment. Over 60s can pick up a Win 7 machine for only £35! Surely, there must be similar organisations all around the country?

I cleaned mine out about 2 months ago, as I have done every 6 months or so since I bought it. I run malware checks, RegScrub, and virus scans regularly, and defrag now and then. I'll give your recommendation a go, though. Ebay for a PC? Wow, that frightens me.......but I'll have a look.

Then your computer really is on its last legs! Hurry!

As for ebay, it's like anything else: google for details of the item, msg/email to get a feel for the seller. With high end desktop computers, they're a bit like modern cars and electronics these days - they generally carry on for years without a glitch, as long as you look after them and don't abuse them. People just outgrow them, because they want to play hungrier games, or whatever. Then they sell them in perfect nick for 10 or 15% of what they paid for them. My main PC is a Dell T3500, with spec somewhere north of what you say you're after:

...+ £500Gb HD. £99. I think I've had it for about 18 months now, and it's never missed a beat.

If eBay is truly daunting for you then you could try http://www.tier1online.com/ who refurb and warranty second hand computers.

Your budget will get you into Core i5 and 8Gb RAM or above; I just had a very quick look at found an HP Core i5, Windows 10 Pro, 8Gb RAM for £304 inc. VAT

Have a look at Aria PC. Massive retailer but they do refurbed machine's.

We bought a Lenovo workstation from them for £300 mainly for my missus to work from home. It's blazingly fast and features a server processor. It looks to have hardly been used.

It came with an Nvidia Quadro card which will run autocad. It will also divert processing to assist the CPU which a standard desktop can't do. So worth looking at workstations.

We also have an older HP Elite mini desktop that we use for media and streaming video to the main TV. You can pick these up for £100.
