I Need A Good Mexican Cookbook

I'm very lacking when it comes to culinary skills, but after a pizza & pasta evening at friends a few weeks ago and seeing my mate cooking alongside his wife kind of shamed me

We'll be returning the favour at some point and I would love to get involved and put at least part of the meal together.

Are any of you using a good Mexican cookbook, that a novice could follow, but still be able to put some interesting dishes together ?

Thanks.

Or just follow a basic chilli con carne recipe frying 3 onions until soft adding a few chopped cloves of garlic with 5% fat steak mince, passata, red wine and hot chilli powder followed by a couple of tins of cooked red kidney beans [and any other beans you like] then buy in taco shells, tortillas, guacamole/ sour cream and tomato dips with a bottle of sweet chilli sauce and have some finely chopped red chillies in a side dish [but wash your hands and the chopping board well and rinse very well under a running tap after].Shred some iceberg lettuce, add some red peppers sliced finely and have a do it yourself feast.

A nice chilli is a favourite meal in our house. My wife puts it all in the slow cooker for the day (apart from the kidney beans). On one occasion she added a few (too many) drops of that 'Insanity Sauce' into the mix... Couldn't feel my lips for two hours:eek:

Mexican food is subtle, full of ritual and can involve guinea pigs. In chocolate sauce. Now, G-Zero (or may I call you G) how far do you want to go with this Mexican thing? Because your mate is going to be really impressed when this lands on his plate....

Mexican Food Made Simple by Thomasina Miers. She's a bit rather often extremely irritating on TV, but the recipes are very good and work well at home.

Coolchili.co.uk is good for spices. Pricier than some but the stuff they sell is good quality. They do some good recipes on their site as well.

I'd already looked at Amazon and that book, along with one by Lourdes Castro, but there were so many I couldn't decide. There was one book priced at £70 and another at £90

Thanks also for the link to www.coolchile.co.uk

They cost more than a guinea too these days:smile:

A regular addition in Mexican food is mole but it's not this...

I reckon Mort that could also be used for chainring removal, cassette cleaning, or some such, between corn tortillas, so it'll probably be a useful investment.

Mexican food is not very complicated at all and you shouldn't have much trouble to learn a few dishes quite quickly.
